Pilates Exercise Regimen

Imagine a type of exercise that could do more than just make you stronger or help you lose weight. What if there was a type that could actually improve your posture, help prevent future injuries, improve you coordination and balance, and make you better at physical sports. What if the positive aspects of this theoretical regimen didn't stop there, but when on to make you more flexible, improve your sense of touch, make it easier for you to move, make you stronger, and even alleviate back pain? Of course one exercise regimen could not possibly do this, could it? Yes, it could and this program goes by the name of Pilates.

A regimen that could do all this would likely be considered some new system that required high-tech exercise equipment, probably recently discovered by researchers after years of study. On the contrary, the Pilates program came to exist in the year 1880, over 100 years ago, in Germany. Pilates was the concept of a man named, you guessed it, Pilates. When he was just a boy, Pilates was slammed with one physical issue after another, such as Rickets, Asthma, and unusual bone formations.

As a stubborn young man, Pilates refused to accept the conditions as permanent, and sought to find a way to retrain his body, make it more flexible and durable. After many years of self induced training in meditation and physical fitness.

The compilation of Pilates study came in the form of a regimen that was built upon the principle of balance. The idea was to find a point where strength and flexibility could meet on equal levels. At the same time, it also focused on the balance of the body, the mind, and the spirit. After studying a bit more into his theories of balancing these three, Pilates stumbled upon the eastern theories on equality of calmness and centeredness. All of this coupled with the western worlds approach to exercise (motion, and strength) he brought together his new and ultimate exercise program, the Pilate Regimen.

The overall concept of the program, though there have been many offshoots over the decades, is centered around concentration of movements, the use of the bodies center (lower back/abdomen), and smooth movements, as well as that of controlled breathing. There are many great sources of information on the Pilates regimen, and once you start delving into them, you will find that there is a mass of different techniques to it. Though this might be a bit confusing at first, there are ways to choose the correct one for you, as each way focuses on a different aspect of your being and well being.

Consult your physician on the subject. Most doctors are very much for the Pilates Regimen, as it has such a success rate from past test programs.

Losing Weight Through Efficient Exercise and Smart Nutrition

It is pretty obvious why more and more people are overweight. With all the modern conveniences, people are no longer walking or riding bicycles to work or school. People are doing less and less yard and house work. Everyone is becoming more sedentary at work, at school, and at home. We are not playing outside as much and running around as much. Instead we are watching TV, doing work on computers, surfing the internet, or playing video games. We are simply not moving our bodies as much as in the past and this is taking a devastating toll on our health and well being.

Something has to be done about this. The solution lies within you. You must take action to educate yourself and then to nurture yourself back to optimal health and fitness. A good starting point is through admission. Our modern world is very demanding and it is quite understandable that you may feel a little overwhelmed, tired, fatigued, and drained. It is okay to admit this and begin your calm surrender. In fact, the most important step is to first acknowledge the need for change.

Proper nutrition is essential. A balanced and healthy diet can be very difficult to achieve in our busy modern world. Today, more than ever before, we need to pay very close attention to what we putting into our bodies. We should change our diets to avoid many of the modern man made substances we ingest. Believe it or not, there are many people today who are significantly overweight yet they are very hungry all the time. This is because they are consuming many foods and beverages that have very empty calories and their bodies are actually undernourished. Yes, can you believe this? Many people today are overweight but are actually malnourished! There is a need to evaluate daily nutrition and improve it. What are you putting into your body on a daily basis? Have you researched what you should and should not be eating and drinking? There is tremendous controversy in this area, however, look for the common threads. These are things most professionals agree upon such as: Drink purified water. Drink mostly water for your daily hydration. Most people are not eating enough fresh fruits and vegetables. This is another great source of hydration.

Drink and eat out of glass containers instead of plastic whenever possible.Drinking soda or pop is not good because it is loaded with chemicals, preservatives, additives, sugar, and carbonation. Most fried foods are very bad for you because the oils contain the worst type of fat and these fats tend to go rancid. Most "fast foods" are bad for you for the same reason listed above under fried food. Eating 5 times a day with 3 healthy meals plus 2 healthy snacks is better than 3 heavy meals. Eating a full meal after 6pm at night is not a good idea because digestion will use lots of your energy and interfere with sleep. Whole foods are the best answer. And there are many more common threads about nutrition to consider. We challenge you to research this area rigorously and change your diet for the better based upon your belief system and findings. Simply improving upon the food you eat, water you drink, and basic exercise you perform can make a significant and lasting difference in your life. You are faced with nutrition choices every day. Choose wisely!

Efficient Exercise is the key for long term good health. Over-training can be worse than under-training in many cases because over-training can cause injury and fatigue. Before starting any new exercise program, you should consult with your physician. Beyond that it is critical to use efficient and intelligent methods to improve your flexibility, endurance, strength, and stamina. There are many simple techniques that you can start right away to improve your core and your foundation that will produce excellent health and fitness benefits in the long term. A balanced body is a very worthy goal that will allow total wellness to flourish in your life. The benefits of exercising have been proven to improve health for so many reasons. Exercising and keeping your body in good physical condition can lead to a highly efficient natural detoxification system that is vital to disease and illness prevention.

Exercising intelligently and efficiently is the key for long term good health. As a starting point, take a serious look in a long mirror. Look at your body facing directly in the mirror. Now turn to the side and review your profile. How is your posture? Are you out of alignment? Are your shoulders raised up near your ears or behind you, down on your back and relaxed? Is your head, neck, shoulders, hips, knees and feet in proper alignment? Have you been evaluated by a professional licensed physical therapist, doctor, Pilates, or yoga instructor recently? What would they say? Do you sit at a desk in front of a computer for your job? Do you sit excessively during the day at your job and again at night on the couch at home? Do you experience aches and pains in your neck, shoulders, and back? Proper posture especially in this day and age is critical to restoring balance and wellness in your life. Our modern lifestyle tends to over develop the front of our bodies and neglect our backs. Muscles, especially in the back, abdomen, and legs, become very weak over time. These core muscles are the most important yet are often the most neglected.

The basic components of an intelligent, efficient, exercise program include the following: Consultation with your physician. Cardiovascular risk assessment. Consultation with a licensed physical therapist and other professionals such as credible, qualified Pilates or yoga instructors. Cardio / Endurance training (walking, swimming, biking, etc.). Flexibility training (basic stretching, Yoga). Strength training (Pilates, basic weight training, yard work). Relaxation training (meditation, music). Find an "accountability partner" to exercise with. You can motivate each other significantly.

A critical element of proper exercise is the core training. This is the foundation upon which you build. In today's busy modern world we all are faced with limited time and money. This is why learning how to do key flexibility, strength, and endurance exercises quickly and efficiently is critical. As with nutrition there are many so called "experts" out there. As a foundation, I do perform several core strength exercises using Yoga and Pilates principles daily. A balanced body is a very worthy goal that will allow total wellness to flourish in your life.

There are many things you can do to significantly improve your health and well being. Don't give up, stay positive, and fight back. You can do it! Try to work on all health elements (attitude, passion, nutrition, exercise, rest & relaxation, detoxification, hobbies, etc.), but be sure to zero in on the two key elements of smart nutrition and efficient exercise. Simply improving upon the food you eat, beverages you drink, and exercises you perform can make a significant and lasting difference in your life.

Pregnancy Exercise DVD Maintains Mom's and Baby's Health

Use your pregnancy exercise DVD to maintain your own good health and to promote your baby's healthy development.

Daily practice with your pregnancy exercise DVD strengthens your cardio-vascular system, preparing it to endure the overwhelming stress of labor and delivery. Maintaining your muscles' tone and building their strength, your pregnancy DVD also builds your immune system; and many of your immunities pass to your baby. Work with your pregnancy workout also cleanses, detoxifies, and replenishes your muscles, reducing your fatigue and irritability. Most of all, your prenatal fitness DVD promotes development of self-control, teaching you to breath in rhythm with your movement.

Pregnancy Yoga DVD Develops Two Strong, Healthy Hearts

Yoga slows, steadies, and strengthens your heart. Strengthening your own heart, you develop your baby's healthy heart, too. When you practice with your pregnancy yoga workout DVD, controlling your breathing and especially concentrating on long, full breaths cleansed by thorough, deep exhales, you increase blood's flow to your baby. As you get more oxygen from your deep breaths and release more respiratory by-products in powerful "sighs," your baby enjoys the benefits of more oxygen. Her cardio-vascular system grows stronger right along with yours.

As you practice yoga, you especially learn to coordinate your breathing with your muscles' movement. Preparing to move into an asana, you take and release a deep, cleansing breath; you will do the same thing when you feel a contraction beginning. Your baby also will feel the force of your contractions, and her heart rate may increase as you help with her debut. Moving into your pose, you draw-in a deep breath as your muscles flex, and you control your exhalation to maintain balance and posture. Sustaining the pose and meditating, you breathe in and out regularly and rhythmically, paying extra attention to how you exhale so that you do not hyper-ventilate. When your contractions peak, you will control your breath in exactly the same way.

Practice with Your Pregnancy Yoga Exercise DVD Increases Benefits of Other Exercise

Yoga is good alone. But it gets really good when you combine it with other exercise. Use your daily yoga practice to supplement, complement, and reinforce other elements in your prenatal "fitness and beauty regime." During your first trimester, begin walking at least twenty minutes twice per day. As your pregnancy progresses, extend each walk to thirty minutes. Exercise physiologists claim you get more benefit from two half-hour walks than from one long walk, because you give muscles time to refresh and rebuild. In between walks, stretch, relax, and restore tired thighs, calves, and buttocks, working with your pregnancy exercise DVD. Leg muscles take a beating as your baby grows; condition them not only with strength and endurance training but also with stretching and relaxing from yoga

Yoga - The Best Exercise For Total Wellbeing

When you are looking for a way to relieve stress, a way of toning up, and getting in touch with your entire spiritual and physical being, then you might want to think about yoga and meditation.

Yoga is both physical and mental. The muscles and postures you use help your breathing, and give you muscle tone, but yoga also helps you deal with stress. These exercises are slow and the breathing techniques that are used are meant to be relaxing and initiate meditation.

Yoga as an Exercise Routine

Many people think yoga is only a stress reducer, but in truth, it is also a way of toning your body and this type of exercise will get you in shape and increase your flexibility and strength. Just as in other exercise routines, yoga helps you lose weight, boost your energy levels, and gives you good balance and dexterity. Yoga can even improve your heart rate.

Yoga helps you strengthen both your body and your spirit, and mind. Because it focuses on everything, your total mind and body health is improved.

The More Intense Yoga Practitioner

Some people swear so much by yoga that it becomes a way of life for them. These people feel that yoga also brings many emotional benefits. People start yoga for several reasons. Some because they want the exercise, but many start as a way of relieving stress, and promoting their emotional well being. Because yoga involves body toning exercise, but at the same time special yoga breathing and meditation, this causes a calming effect and brings better mental awareness to people who practice it.

All in all, the benefits of yoga are many. It promotes muscle tone, flexibility, energizes you, allows you to lose weight, and relieves stress, helps you to meditate, and breathe correctly. There are many reasons why yoga a is good for you, but mainly because it brings you mental, and emotional benefits as well as physical toning.

Ease Fibromyalgia Pain With Exercise and Slow Breathing

Let's face it, living with fibromyalgia is painful and exercise is often the last thing our bodies wants to do. But did you know that new research suggests that deep breathing, such as that recommended in yoga and meditation, can lower pain levels both for healthy people and some people with fibromyalgia? Deep breathing, such as that practiced during yoga, meditation, and exercise, helps by increasing blood flow and circulation while also slowing down the heart rate allowing relaxation to occur. It is during this state of relaxation that we are able to function at more optimum levels and feel a lot less pain and stress.

When you have fibromyalgia, there is a tendency for clenching to occur, which is an involuntary reaction to stress. This clenching reduces blood flow to the muscles, which then causes pain. That's why a stressful lifestyle - plus too much couch time - is a double-whammy for conditions like fibromyalgia. Too little exercise slows blood flow to muscles, so fibromyalgia pain just gets worse. However, studies show that walking, stretching, swimming, and strength training all help control fibromyalgia pain and muscle tenderness and that exercise just three times a week improves life on many levels.

Exercise can not only help you feel good and look good, but it can relieve fatigue and depression as well as help people to feel better about themselves, and more in charge of their lives. Studies have shown conclusively that exercise is the best thing for depression because it releases endorphins, which are 'feel good' chemicals released in the brain and which helps us to go beyond our ordinary pain thresh hold and push beyond boundaries that might otherwise be limiting us. In addition, exercise helps your mood, helps your sleep, and definitely helps your pain.

In addition to the stress relieving aspects, research also has shown that a well-balanced program of regular exercise can produce benefits to the muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory systems, digestive, and other systems, helping to build and maintain overall good health. Exercise will definitely help strengthen your immune system and this is necessary if we are to heal from not just fibromyalgia, but anything that ails us at all.

In order for an exercise program to produce maximum benefits, it must contain the following three components: stretching, aerobic exercise, and strength training.

1. Stretching helps to keep a muscle at its optimal length. Under the stress of repeated contractions, a muscle tends to shorten as each individual muscle fiber becomes stronger. Within groups of opposing or antagonistic muscles, one group of muscles or muscle fibers usually becomes stronger than the rest. This leads to muscle shortening on the side with the stronger fibers. Stretching promotes length. A stretched muscle fiber is stronger because it contracts over a greater length. Stretching also helps to promote balance and keeps joints limber. Gentle stretching should be done both before and after a round of aerobic exercise or strength training.

2. Aerobic exercise is the heart of any program. Aerobic exercise should begin with a warm-up of about 5 minutes after stretching. The warm-up allows the cardiovascular and respiratory systems to gear up for increased oxygen demand. The aerobic cycle then involves a period of between 20 and 30 minutes of muscle work in which the muscles undergo a repetitive cycle of contraction and relaxation. This cycle increases the muscle stamina and, with consistency, can greatly increase endurance. Aerobic exercise prepares the muscle for the challenge of strength training.

3. Strength training uses resistance against active contraction to build muscle mass. This is known as the primary principle; all muscle tissue must work against a load to become stronger and larger. A muscle used repetitively against little or no load will not increase in strength, although some increase in size may occur. To increase strength, a muscle must be consistently contracted to at least 50% of its maximum length. This cycle should be repeated as 3 sets of 6 contractions, 3 times a week. At this level, the muscle achieves maximum strength while avoiding fatigue.

Any cycle of aerobic or strength training should be followed by a cool down period. This involves reducing a muscle group's workload gradually over at least 10 minutes. A cool down helps keep the blood from returning to the heart too quickly. It lets the heart and lungs re-adjust to a resting level and allow the circulatory system adequate time to flush out waste products built up during exercise.

A consistent regimen of appropriate exercise 3 times a week increases muscle size and strength and strengthens the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The immune system is also stimulated by exercise. Even moderate regular exercise has the additional benefits of weight control, strengthening of the bones, decreased blood pressure, and decreased risk of heart attacks.

Although exercise is not always a comfortable activity to engage in when you have fibromyalgia, muscle endurance increases your capabilities and helps to make life a little less stressful and a little more easy. Think of it this way, you can have weak muscles that hurt or strong muscles that hurt - which would you prefer? Just start with ten minutes a day and build up gradually. Remember to go at your own pace and remember the adage, "listen to your body", as this cannot be overstated with fibromyalgia. Proceed like a tortoise: slow and steady. And, like the tortoise, you too will reach the finishing line and gradually get stronger each and every day.

Pilates, Not Just an Exercise But an Art Form

Pilates are believed to uplift your mental mood, improve your health and add strength and flexibility to your body. People of all ages can participate in this well-rounded exercise program. When doing the exercises, the movements are slow and precise but upper and lower body strength is needed to achieve balance and to maintain a clean line. All you need to perform the exercises are comfortable stretch clothes and a small exercise mat.

This type of exercise program was an old practice that has recently soared in popularity, much like yoga. The unique fitness routine requires a lot of discipline and mental focus. It is best learned by attending a class with a trained instructor. After a few months, it is possible to attain the flexibility and grace of a dancer. It is also used as part of a weight control program.

The exercise program is basically a body-conditioning regimen. The program focuses on creating a strong, flexible body and an overall lean tone. Like any form of exercise, the longer you do it the more endurance you will build. Although the movements are not rigorous like aerobic exercise, these take a lot of strength, balance and muscle coordination. It is one of the many popular exercises that work the core, which is the torso region of the body.

The program has many benefits. People that do this form of exercise tend to develop sculpted, lean bodies. This method elongates the muscles, which adds a dancer or gymnast style elegance to an individuals posture. You become stronger and more coordinated.

The exercise methods were created during WWI. The creator was a sickly and weak child that suffered from asthma. His parents put him in various sports to build his lung strength and to help him become an overall healthy child. When he became a nurse, he first created the fitness program to help injured soldiers. He used his technique to assist men with muscle and coordination recovery from their injuries during the war. He also created a machine that coincided with the exercise program to help build upper body strength.

He studied various forms of yoga and meditation arts from around the world. He also incorporated martial arts into his method making it somewhat of an art form. Besides the physical advantages of the program, it is also said to bring clarity and peace of mind. Therefore, it is considered a holistic form of exercise.

Joseph Pilates believed that our physical and mental natures are one. The constant flow of energy is vital to achieving the best results. Breathing becomes essential to maintaining a healthy mind and body. Deep focus and being in tune with your body add a certain level of inner harmony and control. This is a wonderful exercise program that promotes a healthy body and mind.

This method, for the most part, makes the user aware of breathing and aligning of the spine and helps to strengthen the deep torso muscles to make it possible to alleviate and prevent back pains. With pilates for beginners you will start by learning some simple pilates moves. For all the free information you'll need to get started, please visit our website.

Exercise - A Must For Everyone

Exercise is any activity that imparts health and fitness benefits by making the body do physical exertion and it increases the amount of oxygen delivered to muscles thereby improving cardio vascular health. Most people want to exercise to lose weight or to remain fit but there are other reasons too like strengthening muscles, practicing different athletic skills, optimizing cardiovascular system, fun for socializing or for any random reason. Exercises can be light like walking, or can be moderate like walking briskly, cycling and many more and lastly exercise can be of vigorous types like running, heavy weight training and others.

Though every physical activity is an exercise, exercises are also divided into three basic categories which are aerobic, anaerobic and agility training exercises. The word, aerobic, means, 'with help of oxygen' so it improves the body's consumption of oxygen. These aerobic exercises include swimming, running, cycling, walking and many others which increase our metabolism level. There are many visible advantages of aerobic exercises like strengthening and toning of muscles, improved circulation, reduced blood pressure, reduced migraine suffering, increased stamina and many more.

The next category is anaerobic exercise which is used to build power, strength and muscle. Anaerobic means without air and the exercises including in these categories are short, fast and intensive. Weight training, fast skipping, isometrics are some of the examples of anaerobic exercises. Muscle fatigue can be experienced due to formation of lactic acid in these kinds of exercises. They are more suited for building strength and muscle mass. These exercises help in weight loss because muscles burn more calories than any other tissue in the body thereby allowing you to get rid of fats even while you are resting. Anaerobic exercises helps the exerciser get stronger, control body weight and to experience growth in muscle mass. After a few practice sessions, the exerciser can withstand a greater build up of lactic acid and can eliminate it more rapidly.

The last category is agility training which aims at maintaining balance and control while exercising. Position, coordination, balance and the ability to change posture & speeds are acquired by people who play certain sports and practice agility training extensively. Agility training is required in sports like soccer, hockey, badminton, basket ball, tennis, volley ball, rugby and many more.

Yoga originated in India constitutes another form of exercise which is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Yoga exercises use the combination of meditation and breathing exercises aimed at unifying the body, soul and spirit along with the benefits of improving balance, flexibility, postures and muscle strength.

One should be motivated enough to start exercising because most people have the same excuse that they don't have time. If you are really busy, then you can add simple exercises to your daily routine like walking from the bus stop, using stairs instead of elevators, vigorous household work and many more. To remain active throughout the day it's essential to add at least 30 minutes exercise to your busy routine. When you start exercising, begin with your own comfortable pace and most importantly start enjoying it. Try to bring variation in your exercise routine in terms of pace, alteration of exercises for more benefit and eventually it will become a part of your life style. Adding physical activity can bring about more benefit to your health than dieting alone.

Pregnancy and Exercise For Women Over 35

Women who are taking into consideration pregnancy over 35 often think about how their bodies will adjust during the 9 months they will carry their child. Once you've done all the calculating in your pregnancy calendar and have had your pregnancy confirmed by your obstetrician or other medical professional, it's time to start thinking about how your current trips to the gym or at-home exercise routine may change.

Exercise should be an important part of your daily routine and can be extremely beneficial for not only you, the 'more mature' mother, but for your baby as well. Besides the obvious benefits of having a healthy body with more energy, being in shape physically can help you to deal with the demands that having a baby can put on your body during pregnancy and in having the energy to care for your child.

Not only can pregnancy and exercise give you an emotional lift, but it may also help you to have a shorter recovery time and allow you to bounce back more quickly than you might if you're not in good health. Exercising helps you to adjust to the additional weight you'll be carrying around by the last trimester, improves circulation, helps to relieve common occurrences like backaches and helps to prevent varicose veins and constipation.

As with any physical activity concerning pregnancy, you should discuss all exercise routines and activities with your doctor. Some women may have to significantly reduce their exercise regime due to previous history of miscarriage, an incompetent cervix, multiple fetuses, or other health related concerns. Others are free to continue exercising as normal as long as there does not appear to be any complications along the way. Always be sure to notify your obstetrician if you notice spotting during your pregnancy or have significant discomfort or pain after exercising as this could indicate a potential problem.

If you are a workout fanatic 7 days a week for 3 hours a day, you may need to restrict some of the types of workouts that you do and take it a little easier especially during the last trimester. If you never work out at all except to get in and out of the car to go to work or to take your other children to their extracurricular activities, then now is a good time to take a look at what you can do to increase your overall physical health.

There are many exercise techniques that you can adopt to increase blood flow, energy, and emotional balance, in addition to improving your body's stamina, balance and alignment as well as your overall muscle health and strength. Some of the regular activities you can do throughout your pregnancy can include yoga, Pilates, stability balls, meditation, tai chi, walking, swimming or other low-impact activities. Many women who jog or run on a regular basis prior to conception can continue that activity for most of their pregnancy as long as they are careful and closely monitor their bodies.

If you haven't been exercising on a regular basis start gradually, keeping it at a moderate level and be sure not to overdo it. Listen to your body and when it starts to tell you to slow down or you start to feel pain, it's time to stop and take a break. Remember to drink lots of water during and after exercising which helps to replenish the oxygen supply for both you and the baby. Pregnancy and exercise go hand in hand to provide you and your baby with the physical and emotional balance that you need.

A Brief History of Exercise Part II

Lacking a sure path, the industry succumbed to trends and counter-trends. In the early 90s step-aerobics hit health clubs claiming to be the answer to knee problems. After a decade of step-aerobics, however, its students noticed that their bodies were not only failing to become more buff. Many were seeing negative results: a chunky appearance, tight, graceless muscles and pain in their knees in spite of the impact reduction the step was supposed to deliver.

Enter the resurgence of yoga in the 90s as a correction to step, replacing loud disco music and latex with stretching, peace of mind and softer workout clothes. The problem with this next development is that yoga is not exercise but rather a physical form of meditation. To redress the problem, yogis tweaked the format to better resemble exercise. Yoga became power yoga, hot yoga, flow yoga and so on, but the essential nature of yoga remained. Its colorfully-named postures randomly conformed, or failed to conform, to the human muscular system.

When it came to giving its students better bodies, its strong points as an exercise system were found lacking. Nowhere in yoga, to name two shortcomings, is there either effective strengthening for the abdominals and glutes, or are there techniques for burning fat.

Which brings us to Pilates, a system that finally seemed to understand abdominals. Joseph Pilates began his work by designing exercise machines in Germany during World War I using old hospital beds. Later in New York he used his machines to rehabilitate dancers. More than any other exercise trend, Pilates's popularity typifies the reactive nature of recent exercise design. Americans went from jumping up and down on steps, to leaning down into poses and now to lying down completely. This new laid-back format addressed the need for core work, but at a cost, and not just a monetary one.

By placing its students in a prone position, Pilates removed the weight-bearing element from exercise and with it exercise's role in helping the body burn away fat, including abdominal fat. Pilates' focus on the abs also misses the forest for the trees. The back, shoulders, glutes, hamstrings and thighs all play an essential role in aligning the body. The original Pilates technique pays short shrift to these muscle groups to the detriment of overall control, balance and coordination.

In the late 90s Bikram yoga entered in response to the lack of strengthening in yoga. Though heat and squats did increase the intensity of the experience, Bikram's yoga poses remained the same old peaceful, muscle-surrendering lessons in relaxation. The problem remained that none of these solutions by themselves effectively changed people's bodies. The exercise industry's most recent solution: do it all. In order to be fit, it declared, you need to do a combination of yoga, Pilates and aerobics. Current books on star workouts typically feature trainers leading celebrities through this exercise trio.

There's a catch, however, to this formula. Compartmentalizing exercise elements allows two thirds of your system to rest while only one is working - and your body is never fully challenged. Thus compartmentalized, exercise elements can never fully impact the state of the body. And honestly, who besides the stars has time to do all three? Clearly exercise has come to be driven not by physiology but by fad.

Certainly, the fitness industry has made a tremendous contribution to our health. Be someone who exercises and you'll look good, feel good and stay younger longer. Yoga, pilates, working with weights, dancing, biking, hiking, boxing and hundreds of other physical activities - they all make you more fit. What we are just discovering is how much exercise can do for you. New fitness trends such as The Bar Method integrates all five principle elements of fitness: stamina, strength, flexibility, body alignment, and coordination into one simple, gentle, hour-long workout that produces ground-breaking results.

Try to Exercise - Yoga Asana to Achieve Effective Weight Loss

It has been a stereotypical piece of advice that having a balanced diet in conjunction with regular exercise is the simplest natural way to reduce weight and achieve a healthier body. This advice is applicable to many dieters but it's too difficult to maintain for a long period of time in order to get appreciable weight loss results. Hence, you may try to add yoga exercises in your weight reduction activities.

In its simplest essence, yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual activity intended to attain a state of perfect spiritual calmness and perception through meditation while in a still body position. Although yoga is a traditional Hindu activity, people of various religions around the world already tried to practice it for their own purposes. In fact, many people have already proved that yoga provides a number of health benefits, including significant weight loss. The Yoga Asana is the specific form of yoga exercise that can significantly help reduce the weight of the person who successfully performs it.

If you want to get rid of your excessive weight this way, you should first decide to commit yourself with a scheduled set of yoga exercises without compromising your other daily activities. Around 90 minutes could be enough to have an effective yoga exercise in each day. It is also important to choose a peaceful and solemn place where you can perform this exercise without any disturbances. If possible, turn off your phone so that you can do the yoga exercises continuously.

To get started, you have to sit still in an Indian sitting position with your spine serving as an outlet of biodynamic union. Listen to your body as you try to meditate to your inner self. Just make sure that you are not pushing yourself too hard. Avoid going beyond a position that causes you any pain or discomfort. Next, try to breathe in and then breathe out with your stomach empty, and do this repeatedly for several minutes. Aside from the sitting position, you may also do the Yoga Asana while standing on your head or simply lying with your back on a mat. Any of these positions should let you achieve a state of tranquility without posing any harm on your body parts, especially your spine.

Moreover, there were several established scientific explanations regarding the weight loss effects of yoga. Most of these conclude that yoga lets your digestive system efficiently function as a result of the physical, mental, and spiritual relaxation. The good quality of breathing in and out also helps your body achieve a much better blood and air circulation, which is also necessary in enhancing your body metabolism as well as detoxification. Aside from achieving weight loss, this yoga exercise can also improve your body strength and flexibility, reduce stress, enhance energy regeneration, prevent fatigue, and provide relief from several types of body pain.

Yoga and the Economy, Part III - The Economy of Yoga (Exercise With Breath Awareness)

In Part II of this series, I argued that yoga is the perfect antidote for economic hard times. As modern yoga masters Iyengar and Bhajan state, yoga was created over 5,000 years ago to help the everyday individual "satisfy all human needs" in the face of "hardship and suffering" and the challenges of "making a living, raising a family, and finding meaning and purpose." Yoga is perfect for tough times since it is tough: tried, true, deep, modifiable, and life-transforming.

In this article, we will look at breathing exercise (pranayama) and physical exercise (asana), two of yoga's eight major areas of wellness, so you can create and develop a yoga practice during days when time and money might be scarcities. We'll start with breathing and move onto the physical exercises.

1) Breathing Exercise (pranayama):

Save yourself energy and make yourself feel stronger and more relaxed by practicing yoga breathing.

First, exercise without breath control is not worth doing. It is a waste of energy to huff and puff through a workout, but we often do because we are encouraged to push, compete, and strain while we engage in athletic-based movement (e.g., running, basketball). What's worse, many of us are 'top' or chest breathers, utilizing only one-third of our lungs' capacity, and since typical athlete-focus exercise systems do not teach us to feed our moving muscles and joints with great amounts of oxygen, many traditional exercise systems do little for our health and in fact over time often wear the body down.

When practiced with mindful breathing, on the other hand, yoga gives back as much energy as it uses, and this is one of yoga's greatest noted benefits. As yoga master Bikram Choudhury states, "Yoga is a gas station." You do not burn up energy when you practice, but rather gain it. Yoga makes you incredibly fuel-efficient, which is of course highly economical.

The best news is that pranayama costs nothing. It only takes time and repetition. To get the most out of your poses, and your life, practice long, deep breathing (yoga breathing) often. Inhale and exhale exclusively through the nose, filling and emptying the lungs with a relaxed chest and back and an active, soft belly. I provide a link at the end of this article to a video demonstrating this ancient, healing breathing technique that is the backbone, if you will, of yoga. Eventually, you will be a deep breather automatically, even when your heart rate is very high from physical exercise.

2) Physical Exercise (asana):

Whether you are short on money or time (or both) these days, here are some ways to get the most out of yogic physical exercise. We'll first look at yoga for those short on money and then to yoga for those short on time.

A. If you are short on money:

I do not wish to put any yoga studio out of business, but the good news in hard economic times is that yoga need not be expensive, and classes are not the only place where you can learn and practice. I practiced yoga in my home on and off for three years before taking a class, my only investment a $15.00 mat. Develop or deepen a regular home yoga practice. There are many tools to help you.

The greatest tool is the library. I first learned yoga by borrowing yoga books and videos/DVDs from my local library, and you can do the same, even if you are an advanced practitioner. Make it part of your practice to track borrowed materials' due dates to avoid overdue fines.

Other tools for learning yoga poses are Yoga Journal's website and free downloads of many high-quality yoga class video podcasts featuring many great teachers. Research your virtual teachers and try many out, and trust that you know enough yoga, and that they are knowledgeable enough, to provide you with a good home yoga practice. When practiced mindfully, yoga can be a beautiful, solo endeavor.

If you are a beginner, avoid power, vinyasa, or Ashtanga yoga videos/DVDs unless they are beginning level. These styles move very quickly or are rigorous, and not every beginner enjoys that or benefits from that speed and effort. If you already know yoga, though, these styles can create a vigorous home practice that when practiced regularly can easily eliminate the need for a fitness center membership.

If you want to attend an inexpensive yoga class, start with your local YMCA. I teach at mine, and my students pay just $4.00 per class; there is no studio in my city that comes close to meeting that deal. Your local recreation department is also a good place to look for inexpensive yoga. My city's program offers yoga for about $6 per class.

Search online using your town/city/neighborhood and 'yoga' as keywords. You will find many experienced, registered yoga instructors not affiliated with a yoga studio who often offer 'donation' (pay what you can) classes. Talk to teachers in advance about their donation classes to determine if they would agree to receive smaller donations from you for awhile.

Got a special skill or talent? Talk with independent yoga instructors about trading your talent and time for free yoga instruction.

Finally, find out if there is Yoga Alliance-recognized teacher training in your area. If there is, talk to the trainers about classes their trainees might teach, which might be offered at a reduced rate.

B. If you are short on time:

Yoga is perfect for those with little time on their hands. A few minutes of deep breathing and classic poses can alter your look, your outlook, and your health.

If you have very little time to exercise, try this 15-minute sequence (13 minutes of poses plus 2 minutes for between-pose preparation and breaks). Use yoga breathing and take breaks when necessary.

-Mountain: 1 minute

-Downward Facing Dog: 1 minute

-Triangle: 1 minute each side

-Downward Facing Dog: 1 minute

-Tree: 30 seconds each side

-Upward Boat: 30 seconds

-Cobra: 30 seconds

-Seated Forward Bend: 1 minute

-Shoulder Pose: 1 minute

-Reclined Twist: 1 minute each side

-Relaxation: 3 minutes (use natural breathing here)

Are you strapped for time and need/want fast results from yoga? Try hot yoga. By adding heat to your practice room with an energy-efficient space heater, or by wearing stretchy, water-wicking layers to keep your body's heat close to you, your muscles and joints get stronger and more flexible faster: heat boosts results. If you have cash to spare, take a hot classical yoga class (minimum temperature should be 90 degrees).

Engaging a Yoga Alliance-registered instructor for a private one-hour session can help you make the most of your exercise time. Many yoga instructors teach privately. Ask your instructor to consult with you before your session about your physical exercise goals so that your hour instruction is tailored just for you. Ask your instructor to provide you with thorough notes and handouts to help you practice on your own. A private yoga session averages about $70/hour here in the Midwest.

In the next article, we will explore more limbs of yoga that greatly benefit us, specifically in the emotional and mental realms. After all, in addition to being short on time and money during a serious recession, we humans can also find ourselves short on confidence, patience, and even sleep. Yoga can be your recession remedy in these regards, too.

Yoga Exercise For Health

Yoga Exercise is an excellent way to improve your health. Many people think of yoga as a great way to improve their flexibility and loosen up their joints. Other people use yoga to increase their body strength and balance. And still other people use yoga to cleanse their mind and improve their mental health. It is amazing that yoga can be used to improve so many different areas of their life. Thousands of people use yoga for their health every day.

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and has been used to balance the mind, body and spirit. Yoga users believe that when these areas of your life are in balance, the mental and physical health will improve. When you use yoga for health, it will bring harmony and healing into your life.

For years, there has been a lot of skepticism that yoga was good for your health, but now the mainstream medical community has conducted scientific study of the health benefits of yoga and has proven that yoga exercise does improve your health. It has been shown that the body, mind and spirit do work together and when each is improved through yoga, your mental and physical health improved.

Yoga is a great exercise for almost everyone. It doesn't matter what your age, both young and old can practice yoga. It doesn't matter what type of physical shape you are in, both beginners and seasoned pros get benefits from yoga exercise. It also doesn't matter if you are overweight, yoga will help you trim off the excess pounds without stressing out the rest of your body.

Yoga exercise is a great way to get stress relief while you are at it. Any exercise will help with stress relief by helping you relax. But it seems that yoga helps you relax faster and more completely than any other type of exercise.

Part of the stress relieve is the result of getting additional oxygen into your bloodstream from the breathing exercises. The oxygen helps the body get rid of toxins.

Yoga is also a great exercise if you have joint injuries. The easy stretches help to limber up the joints and will increase your flexibility. The stretches also help to build your muscle strength when you maintain your balance during the various yoga poses.

Keep in mind, when you first start using yoga exercises, you need to start off slow and easy. Remember, the teacher has been practicing yoga for years and has much more flexibility than you do. Just do what you can, and the next day stretch a little more, eventually, you will get to where you have a lot more flexibility than when you started. Remember, if you overdo it and hurt yourself, you will never get the health benefits that yoga will provide for you.

Fibromyalgia - Living Your Best Life - Part 3 - Exercise

If you are anything like me, exercising when you are in pain is the last thing you want to do. However, over the years I have learned that without incorporating exercise into my daily routine, I experience more pain. Even while sitting, I am constantly adjusting positions to keep my body from having a "pain freeze", which is what I call the body's stiff and sore reaction when arising from sleep or sitting too long.

My daily exercise program consists of stretching and aerobics. For stretching I use yoga positions after a warm shower or bath in the morning. The warmth of the water loosens the body and makes stretching less painful. If I am pressed for time in the morning and have to delay yoga, I use a large heating pad to warm my body before stretching. I purchased a 2 foot heating pad and it great for relieving aches.

Most exercise programs recommend warming up before you start any exercise program and slowly working into a routine. I think this advice is very important for those of us experiencing chronic pain. A couple minutes a day is beneficial. Above all, listen to your body. If it is too painful, ease back on a particular movement or remove it from your routine. Also, focus on your breath; make sure that you are taking in deep nourishing breaths. I used to hold my breath during yoga positions. Allowing your breath to flow in and out alleviates body tightness.

Stretching

Yoga (originating from India) is a type of meditation, which joins physical and mental disciplines together, which involves certain postures, controlled breathing, and mental focus. One website recommends Viniyoga or Hatha yoga exercises for those experiencing Fibromyalgia.

I was familiar with yoga and had determined that it was something that I could not do. However, a Physical Therapist and yoga trainer at a clinic I frequented felt it would help me. When he suggested incorporating yoga into my day, indescribable and frightening images entered my mind. What I did not know is that there are variations for each position. I was taught 8 different positions that were customized to my ability. I practiced each day until I reached 20 minutes per set; never pushing myself beyond what I was able to do comfortably. I was really impressed by how much better I felt in body, mind, and spirit.

People who experience chronic pain will recognize the benefits attributed to yoga from the list below:

- decreased muscle pain

- increased muscle strength

- greater endurance and stamina

- mood regulation and relief of depression

- improved sleep

- improved concentration

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese form of martial arts, which reportedly was used to train for strength, balance, flexibility, and speed. Tai Chi is also attributed with the same benefits as yoga. My experience with Tai Chi has been watching others and trying to follow a video. I have not received any personal training. Tai Chi movements can also be adjusted to fit each person's ability.

The thing I love about both of these exercises is that they can be done at home without any special equipment and appear to bring benefit to one's entire being. All that is required is loose clothing, patience with self, and willingness to continue. I would highly recommend beginning with personal instruction to learn correct form.

I recommend taking a few minutes to stretch throughout your day. Reach your arms up above your head as if touching the ceiling; slowly tuck your chin to your chest and roll your body down as if you were going to touch your toes, then allow your head and arms to hang loosely; cross your arms in front of your chest as if your were giving yourself a big hug. If you feel a lot of pain while stretching; pull back on the stretch a bit. Next time you may be able to stretch further.

Aerobics

Swimming is a great full body aerobic routine for those experiencing Fibromyalgia. Some communities have aquatic centers, which teach water aerobics that are designed for those experiencing chronic pain. Community centers, YMCA, colleges, and local schools may also offer programs.

Walking is also good. You can swing your arms and even march part of the time. If you are a fair weather walker, Leslie Sansone has several DVDs for in door walking routines. I have also walked inside a covered mall.

I experience neuroma in both feet and never know when it will flare up. Therefore, most of my aerobic routines are enjoyed inside my home. Using indoor programs at home allows me the freedom to pause at anytime, work at my own pace, eliminates the energy of preparing to go out, and driving myself to and from. I have a mini indoor trampoline, which is great for low impact jogging. Recently, my husband and I purchased an adjustable elliptical machine, which I use on the lowest setting. I began at 5 minutes and continue to add minutes. At this writing I can comfortably do 15 minutes per set.

"The Oregon Health and Sciences University has specific Fibromyalgia videos available":

- Stretching and Balance

- Stretching and Relaxation

- Aerobics

To my knowledge there is not an exercise routine that works for all. Fibromyalgia is unpredictable and experienced differently by each person. From years of experience and research, the best advice I can give is to continue to pursue what works best for you.

Several Methods of Physical Exercise - Which Will Help Us Improve Shape?

Playing golf requires physical fitness, ability of concentration and also positive thinking and attitude. Here are methods of exercise, which will improve your physical fitness, and positively affect strength, shape and manner, in which you employ the abilities of your body, and also the mind and emotions.

1. Aikido practice is dominated by pursuit of physical development and learning proper ways of breathing. Emphasis is placed on relaxation and concentration of energy.

2. The Pilates system emphasizes improvement of posture and body balance. Muscles are also strengthened. Proper use of muscles in everyday activities will improve functioning of the entire body, and will also enhance mental performance: your concentration ability and clarity of thinking will benefit. As Pilates grows in popularity, Pilate classes are being offered not only at specialized studios but also at gyms, health clubs, spas, rehabilitation clinics, senior facilities and community centers around the world.

3. Hatha Yoga: Performing positions, which allow for attainment of perfect body functioning, leading to better control of the mind and emotions.

4. Judith Aston therapy: The purpose of this therapy is to assist people in determination and recognition of habitual movements, developed due to stress, and subsequently to use body "intelligence" to find easier and more effective behavior models.

5. Tai-chi: Art of motion-related meditation; covers the physical and mental sphere. Exercises improve powers of concentration, provides grace, relaxation and ability of concentration.

Top 7 Exercise Plans For Arthritis

Arthritis sufferers are being told they must exercise - and this can be a daunting thought when you are in so much pain and full of stiffness and so tired from the lack of sleep, because the pain and discomfort keeps you awake half the night.

You certainly can't do any high impact exercise.

However, there are plenty of low impact exercises that have helped a lot of people to ease their pain, reduce their stiffness, giving them more balance and stability. As the body relaxes less pain is experienced and you are able to sleep better, which makes the whole day look so much better.

Exercises in the pool. Doing your exercises in water is easier on your joints, the water's buoyancy supports your body's weight which reduces stress on the joints and minimizes pain. But you still need to be careful to not over do things at first. You can walk in the shallow end of the pool, especially if you find walking normally too painful. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to a pool. You do need to bear in mind that exercising, swimming and walking in water are not bone-building exercises.

Yoga actually began more than 3,000 years ago in India. The word yoga is Sanskrit (one of the ancient languages of the East). It means to "yoke," or unite, the mind, body, and spirit.Yoga includes physical movement, and certain lifestyle practices. Training your mind, body, and breath correctly is fundamental. The physical part of the yoga lifestyle is called hatha yoga. Hatha yoga focuses on poses. A person who practices yoga goes through a series of specific poses while controlling his or her breathing. Some types of yoga also involve meditation and chanting. It has been noted to improve your flexibility, strength, balance, and stamina. In addition, many arthritis sufferers who practice yoga say that it reduces anxiety, pain, and stress, improves mental clarity, and even helps them sleep better.

Pilates can easily be tailored to your individual needs where contracting muscles without moving joints can be useful when joints are inflamed. Then there is the movement of both muscles and joints helping to build strength and mobility. Pilates like most exercises recommended in this article pays particular attention to breathing correctly. For an arthritis sufferer there are what is called closed chain exercises, they put less strain on the joints while working muscles groups.

Callanetics once popular, very popular and well known is coming back with a program for people with arthritis type conditions. "Callanetics is a unique program that works your muscles with very small and very intense pulses. It's a technique that gets results because every movement is mindful and precise (each pulse moves less than an inch). The concept was invented in the 1980s, but these movements have truly "evolved" (with new progressions that incorporate spinal stabilization, pelvic floor engagement and Pilates elements). It has a very refined feel - quiet piano music, methodical instruction and lots of between-move stretches".

Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. Qi pronounced chee means the life force. Gong pronounced gung means accomplishment. Qigong practice involves a posture, (whether moving or stationary), breathing techniques, and mental focus. The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions. It also creates a balanced life style, which brings greater harmony, stability, and enjoyment.

Tai Qi It is increasingly being recognized that regular exercise reduces pain, fatigue, and depression, especially through the ancient art of Tai Qi. Tai Qi integrates mental and physical exercises to achieve a more complete, in-depth solution to the problems facing sufferers of arthritis and osteoarthritis. Gentle stretching and strengthening movements, exercises to increase the joints' range-of motion, cardiovascular work, in conjunction with mental exercises. Deep breathing and visualization exercises help evoke healing energy and spirituality to reduce inflammation and stress. The mind-body exercises for arthritis can be modified and performed on a chair you are able to do them standing and moving slowly.

Walking has always been good for any condition. You can decide how far you can walk, you can walk as slow as you like at first. It is free and allows you to get fresh air and some UVs. Make sure you have walking shoes on with plenty of shock absorbency, making the experience as low impact as possible. You can wear a pedometer, this will tell you exactly how far you are walking each week - this will enable you to set goals.

Remember these exercises will not cure your arthritis but if you make one of them part of your life with other lifestyle changes you will make a huge difference to your condition, especially if you change your diet. Some people have told me they just don't have the money for classes. So what can be done instead - second best thing would be a DVD that specializes in the older person, or is designed for someone with one of the many types of arthritis conditions. Walking is free and safer with the right foot wear.

Just start off easy and build up gradually.

Yoga Exercise For a Healthy Standard of Living

The principle of yoga is to help us attain our furthermost potential and also to provide an experience of everlasting health and happiness. The most unique characteristic of yoga is that, it is suitable for all aged group people irrespective of the gender and health. One can practice yoga anywhere and at any time. You do not even need any kind of special equipment to practice it. It is very easy when compared to the other form of exercises and it is very much enough if you are able to spend only a few minutes in the morning practicing yoga and you will be completely ready and refreshed for starting a new day freshly.

The fact that defines yoga uniquely from any other sport activities is that it refreshes your body, mind and the soul simultaneously. Where as the other form of exercise is primarily focused on maintaining a fit healthy body and building muscles. This is the uniqueness of the yoga that it not only concentrates on the physical fitness of our body but also concentrates on mental health and also as well as on your spiritual well being. There are about 12 different styles in yoga. Even though all these styles are commonly based on the similar kind of physical postures, each one of them has a particular prominence. The four most popular styles of yoga are- Hatha, Kundalini, Bikram and Ashtanga. Each one of these is discussed below as follows:

The Hatha is the most popular style of yoga in use. It acts as the underpinning of all other yoga styles. It follows a kind of technique where in you move the body parts in a slow and very smooth manner by doing many different poses which are often called as asanas. It serves the best for beginners of yoga practice. It involves only slow paced stretching along with few breathing exercises and meditation. Many classes at the start will integrate this form of the yoga style wherein you learn just the basic poses and some relaxation methods so that you adapt yourself to yoga as early as possible.

Another form of yoga is the Kundalini, which is a very ancient style of yoga that is in much practice only at the west of lately. The importance of this style is that it employs in breathing in conjunction with the physical body movement. This form of yoga gives more spiritual feel when compared to that of the Hatha and primarily focuses on balancing the energy in your body. But this form involves rapid movement of the body parts through different postures and concentrates more on breathing, chanting and meditation. In the Kundalini series style, each of the exercise is done according to specific breaths that generally do affect the poses intensively. The main goal in performing this exercise is usually to release the energy that is contained in the lower extremities of the body by moving it in the upward direction. Most of the beginners who are unknown about the yoga will normally find it more rationally and physically challenging when compared to the other styles. Basically Kundalini is more physically concentrated and is also considered as the most spiritual kind of yoga in practice compared to the other forms.

The next popular style of yoga is the Bikram which is often termed as the hot yoga as this is the only form of yoga that is normally carried out in a fiery environment. It is a sort of wide-ranging workout with all the mechanisms of fitness such as muscular strength and endurance, loss of weight and cardiovascular flexibility. The fiery room temperature is generally maintained at 95-100 degrees. The heat and energy expelled in this vital yoga mechanism allows us to release toxins through the sweat glands. Also this yoga form warms up the muscles and joints in turn increasing the flexibility. This kind of yoga is not suggested to pregnant women and for people who are suffering from heart problems and high blood pressure as it is very laborious. But it is highly recommendable for people who are injured as it serves a therapy in order to improve the injured limbs bodily fitness and the movement range.

Now the most popular among all the yoga forms is the Ashtanga which is often referred as power yoga. In Sanskrit, Ashtanga means 8 limbs which are referred to the 8 limbs of the yoga. Because of the steady movement of the various poses, this is style is physically challenging. Six of the different Ashtanga series are available and the student's progress depends on their own pace. It is a kind of vital and athletic form of style and is more suitable to people who are very independent in nature and posses a sense of order. But this type of style is not ideal for beginners of yoga who are not in an excellent physical state, as this requires one to jump while changing to the next posture.

So if you are planning to take up yoga, then try one of these forms for sure as a beginner. Each of the forms is defined uniquely which improves your mental and physical health.

The Difference Between Yoga and Exercise

Like regular exercise, yoga strengthens and tones the body. Regular exercise typically makes a body stronger and less flexible. Weight training for example, builds strength by breaking down and rebuilding muscle tissue. That bulky, muscle bound look and tighter muscle mass is a result of this breaking down and rebuilding of muscle. Yoga strengthens the body by toning the muscles and creates longer, leaner muscles due to the stretching. Yoga creates a body that is stronger and more flexible. Often the goal of regular exercise is to increase the heart rate.

While yoga can be practiced vigorously to increase heart rate, it can also be practiced in a way that reduces the heart rate and lowers blood pressure. Typically one exercises to a point of fatigue. At the end of a yoga practice, you feel as though you have had a workout, but are more relaxed and energized. Hatha yoga is not just a series of exercises, but a principle of exercise that involves concentration, breathing and movement.

Yoga offers many additional benefits as well. Bending, stretching and twisting the body massages and soothes the internal organs aiding digestion and elimination. Our hormones are brought into greater balance due to the toning of the endocrine system. The respiratory system is strengthened and the nervous system is soothed. Stress relief is also a major benefit of practicing yoga. In fact, all systems of the body are affected by a yoga practice. A qualified yoga teacher can advise you on the most appropriate yoga practice for you, regardless of age, health issues and fitness level.

Whether practicing vigorously with challenging poses or practicing gently with soothing poses, yoga is balanced action of the body, awareness of breath and steadiness of mind. This is yoga in action, union of the body/mind.

Regular exercise and yoga both help us to lead active, healthy lives. Yet, yoga is a life support system...a way of life that helps us to maintain a healthier body, a calmer mind and a more balanced and peaceful life.

Infertility? Yoga is in, Strenuous Exercise is Out

If you want to get pregnant but are engaged in strenuous workouts, stop. That kind of heavy exercise may put your fertility at risk and cause more harm than good. Instead of doing heavy workouts, trying gentler forms of exercise such as infertility yoga.

A Norwegian study published in the medical journal Human Reproduction found that strenuous workouts can affect a women's chances of becoming pregnant. The study led by Dr Sigridur Gudmundsdottir and colleagues from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Emory University in Atlanta was conducted on nearly 25,000 Norwegian women aged 27, on average.

Some basic findings of the research include:

1. The more frequent and strenuous a woman's physical activity, the greater her chances of being infertile.

2. Active women raise by 3.2 times their chances of becoming pregnant compared to their inactive counterparts.

3. Women increase their chances of infertility by 2.3 times when they work out 'to exhaustion' in contrast to those who don't.

Why yoga is a better alternative

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj which means "to unite or integrate." Hindus believe that integration happens when the mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with one another. As an integrated person, you also enjoy better health, which can improve fertility.

Yoga enables you to refocus on yourself, your body, and your breathing. This is true for both men and women. Overall, yoga techniques aim to put gentle pressure on the different organs of the body, to help realign and balance your body's systems. With proper breathing techniques you allow your mind to become quiet and relaxed, thereby relieving stress and promoting physical healing.

Best yoga styles

Because they are very relaxing, Hatha and Kripalu are two of the best options for overcoming infertility. Hatha yoga from the compound word Ha and Tha (meaning Sun and Moon) aims to balance the male and female energies in your body for better body and mind connection as well as increased vitality. This is the yoga style that most Western people are familiar with. It mostly consists of gentle physical exercises or asanas, purification, controlled breathing, relaxation, and meditative techniques

Because this yoga style is physical, its main focus is on the limbs. Through asanas, you learn poise, balance and strength which lead to a clear mind and improved physical health-the two most important factors for longer periods of meditation. This type of yoga is ideal for women of any age who want to maintain good health.

Kripalu yoga, on the other hand, is a more inward-focused form of hatha yoga that lets you focus on both your body and your spirit. This yoga style usually starts with breathing, stretching, and body postures. Kripalu yoga is recommended for beginners and women of all ages who are out of shape.

Reaping the benefits

If you are new to yoga, expect to reap health benefits as early as Day 1. The first time you do yoga, you will immediately begin to feel more relaxed with correct asanas and breathing techniques that can help quiet your mind and trigger chemical reactions necessary for healing.
