Improve Your Yoga Experience With Yoga Equipment

Around the world Yoga is considered an enjoyable way to keep fit and healthy. And, though it has been around for ages, only recently has Yoga caught the American fancy. It is a well-rounded workout designed to tone up and strengthen muscles; at the same time it increases flexibility. Yoga is also an excellent way to shed weight and boost energy and vitality. As you start to practise Yoga or Pilates, for that matter you will notice the need for some basic Yoga or Pilates equipment and accessories.

Yoga Mats

Good Yoga mats help increase balance and coordination. Most folks are not properly aligned. As a result we do a lot of what we do asymmetrically. For those intending to balance and a sense of symmetry a Yoga mat is a must. Then again, we strongly recommend a hand-woven Yoga mat. However, for those into dynamic and vigorous kinds such Power Yoga, Sticky Mats are well worth considering.

Yoga straps

The Yoga strap is highly beneficial for beginners. They are either fabricated from cotton or nylon and let you grasp your limbs, you couldn't reach. They also help you hold a pose longer. Yoga Straps are especially helpful in bound poses when the hands cannot reach each other or for asanas where you need to hold both feet but cannot reach them.

Yoga blocks

Yoga blocks are also called Yoga bricks and are useful in executing a variety of Yoga poses. Yoga blocks help in execution of poses and offer many other benefits. Some of the benefits of Yoga blocks are that they provide stability and support for proper alignment; they also help reduce the distance between the body and the ground.

Yoga cushions

Yoga cushions help practitioners establish proper spinal alignment so that the posture stays steady, straight, and comfortable. Yoga Cushions are also beneficial to pregnant women and to people recovering from surgery. With Yoga cushions, most poses can be done comfortably as you sit on a chair or using a chair to maintain balance while standing. For added support or cushioning, Yoga Cushions are also used on top of a Yoga Mat or Yoga Chair height.

Yoga balls

Yoga Balls are a versatile prop for many postures. Fabricated from durable vinyl, they help achieve the necessary balance and support for asanas. Yoga Balls effectively increase your flexibility, improve your range of motion and balance, as well as tone up the muscles. Besides, they also help shape the body and relieve of stress.

Discover How Yoga can Improve Workplace Safety and Health

The public view of Yoga has dramatically changed. At one time the vast majority of Yoga schools were home businesses. These days, every fitness studio has Yoga classes and many corporate fitness centers have added Yoga classes to the schedule. So, how else could a local Yoga teacher help your business?

Each business has, within itself, safety hazards, repetitive motion injuries, stressed out employees, and an atmosphere that requires optimum morale. Every possible life skill can be gained from the steady practice of Yoga.

Safety hazards need to be listed in at least two categories, from actual hazards to potential hazards. An actual hazard such as a back injury that occurred in the past, which often happens to employees holding a specific job, or within a particular department, can be prevented by having a Yoga specialist observe the physical movements of those employees.

In an office setting, Yoga techniques can be introduced to gently stretch tendons, muscles, and soft tissue. This has often been referred to as "Office Yoga" and will actually increase productivity as office employees "recharge their batteries."

Within a manufacturing or shipping environment, employees face many risks. Shifting and lifting objects can cause many accidents or repetitive motion injuries. There is also the potential for injury when employees who monitor machinery become less aware of hazards around them. Yoga practice helps employees to increase their awareness on the job.

Repetitive motion injuries can occur on any job. The cost of worker's compensation claims is enough to make any business take preventative action. Yoga classes and Yoga safety programs offer employees methods for preventing injuries. Installing a Yoga program does create a positive atmosphere in the workplace.

Stressed out employees will benefit from any Yoga exercises or techniques. The fact is that stress will cost every company a fortune in health insurance premiums and potential claims. Think of the sick time, lack of production, poor morale, potential office turmoil, and worker's compensation claims. In each case Yoga offers a low cost alternative for small to medium businesses.

Yoga classes in the workplace create an atmosphere of optimum morale. Employees get the message that upper management cares about their well being, when Yoga classes are available. These small "perks" create harmony in the office, on the production floor, and within shipping departments.

Even a worker who is disgruntled will realize the benefits of a corporate Yoga program. Yoga also helps employees develop new life skills such as anger management, stress reduction, moderate diet, healthy living, self-esteem, and much more. The truth is: There are so many benefits to be gained by introducing Yoga into the corporate sector that management is "crazy" not to offer it.

Imagine a company with happy, healthy, and appreciative employees. Yoga could be inserted into the work schedule, for a half-hour per day, and you would still increase productivity. Yoga training in the workplace is truly a "win - win" situation for both the employees and the ownership.

Yoga for Men - Improve Your Stamina - On the Mat and Between the Sheets

When most men think of yoga, they might conjure up images of guys in turbans with a loincloth attempting to put his foot behind his ear. Most yoga classes are filled with women but as their wives and girlfriends come home after yoga class looking and feeling incredible, more men are starting to take note of the benefits of this practice. It's proven benefits that 3.5 million men already enjoy. Yoga's got 5,000 years road testing behind it proving that it:

improves flexibility and endurance
makes you stronger
relieves back pain
charges up your sex life
helps improve your focus, concentration
helps you off the mat by improving ability to manage stress, anger and anxiety
helps improve your performance in other sports
helps you deal with life challenges with more calm and control

Yoga is a rejuvenating form of exercise with many ways of creating a healthy body and also a healthy mind. This versatile Yoga system creates results that you were least expecting such as improved focus and powers of concentration as well as relaxation and stamina that will support every aspect of your daily lifestyle. Yoga is not just stretching or doing poses but it actually is a set of holistic lifestyle practices that also help with training the mind and body.

A regular Yoga practice possesses several wonders for the human body and mind and by incorporating this discipline into your daily schedule, a dramatic change can be observed over a period of a few months or even less. If you don't have time to do a 90 minute practice, start with just 15 minutes a day and gradually work up to longer periods. It is better to do a little bit each day and make it part of your lifestyle, then do a long practice sporadically.

Men are sporty creatures and generally enjoy all types of physical exercise on a regular basis. Therefore, the practice of the yoga poses will create and restore balance after these physical workouts. It must be remembered that different types of sports require the use of different muscle group, for example, in the game of golf and football, the leg and arm muscles come prominently into play to enable those movements to be made, and the practice of Yoga for men would enable those tired and stressed out muscles to relax and heal themselves after a vigorous game.

Weight training is good for the body as long as it is not too severe as it enhances the bone density and muscle tone which not only enhancers the fitness levels but also plays a part in combating arthritis. Weight training combined with Yoga for men would provide even better physical results, as relaxation together with vigorous training would result in even better muscle flexibility.

The controlled breathing practices (pranayama) in Yoga for men creates excellent health and these energies are able to travel throughout the entire body, improving the general level of vitality and central nervous system. The deep breathing involved in the different poses of Yoga delivers oxygen to every part of the body which in turn creates energy. Whenever the person is feeling energized and invigorated, there is a general improvement in the emotional and mental well being as well. Men who practice Yoga would experience a higher concentration and laser sharp focus which would enable them to perform at their best in their daily responsibilities.

Yoga for men is particularly great for active men who loves sports and partake in active and strenuous activities on a regular basis. Sportsmen would definitely appreciate the healing power of yoga after a day of intense training. Yoga for men produces supple muscles and improves flexibility and endurance, which is a great advantage when out in the playing fields. Stretching and moving those muscles would also help repel lactic acids which would otherwise be accumulated in the body causing general muscle fatigue and muscle pains.

Apart from achieving and improving great strength and better flexibility, the joints will become less stressed out and the person would be able to exert even more pressure when playing. As the awareness of the benefits of Yoga for men who is active in sports grows, the number of men practicing Yoga on a daily basis grows as well. The improved flexibility that is gained by doing Yoga also improves the condition of the tendons and the ligaments. As a result, the practitioner of Yoga would experience superior and improved performance the next time he is out there in the playing fields.

As if I hadn't given enough reasons already, yoga can be a very useful tool when it comes to your sex life. Not only will you find yourself more limber and flexible but you will notice a great difference in your endurance and performance times. A lot of yoga poses work not only muscles but organs as well, thus giving you more blood flow to certain parts of your body, helping you last longer in bed. Your heart is also given lots of extra help by doing yoga which transfers over to the endurance side of things, so you will notice you don't peeter out so fast when your making your moves.

Men are interested to partake in this beneficial activity should always consult a doctor before embarking on this exciting journey, yoga for men promised more than just a simple workout. It is a whole new experience with plenty of health benefits to be discovered.

The older generation will also be pleased to know that Yoga for men is not only for young and healthy male athletes but partaking in this activity can assist in diseases such as osteoporosis, prostate conditions, heart problems as well as impotence. Therefore, irrespective of your age or physical fitness, Yoga for men will benefit males form all age groups, socio-economic levels and cultures.

Sporting activities practiced over the years actually shortens the tendons which eventually pulls the spine completely out of alignment thus causing chronic back problems. If these activities included stretching in the form of Yoga, this problem could have been avoided as Yoga allows the fluid to flow back into the stressed joints and helps to loosen the ligaments. Additionally, Yoga releases the build-up of stress in the spine and with regular Yoga practice the alignment of the spinal column can be corrected together with overall posture. Due the corrected alignment of the spine, the posture will be better and you will appear taller and more attractive.

If you are brand new to yoga, you should start off with a class designed for beginners or an introductory class. Ask other yoga practitioners about various teachers, styles and studios. There is a wide range in yoga styles that range from extremely challenging (some might even saying grueling) to very gentle and restorative (where you can even fall asleep in some poses). Research reviews on the internet first to get a sense of the teacher's style and difficulty level.

You might want to also watch some YouTube videos of beginner hatha yoga or buy a DVD if you are concerned about your performance in the class. It's Yoga Practice and not Yoga Perfect so see if you can let go of striving and competition in class. Let the teacher know privately that you are new to yoga. Teachers often go around the room adjusting and assisting the students so no need to feel self-conscious if the teacher adjust your posture. They often do this so you can receive more benefits from the pose or to avoid injury. Avoid going to an Advanced class or All Levels class or a Hot Yoga class if you are new since you might feel intimidated. As your stamina and strength increase you can take on more athletic and challenging kinds of yoga.

Improve Your Health This Year - 5 Tips

Happy New Year! What are your health goals this year? Have you been putting off improving your diet because it seems too hard? Healthy habits can keep you well. All it really takes is to pay attention and to make conscious choices. Keep it simple by focusing on these five things.

If you've read Michael Pollan's book In Defense of Food, you'll find the first three items familiar. I didn't actually intend to duplicate his recommendations - I just came up with the same basic points. He puts it even more succinctly: eat food, not too much, mostly plants. His book is a good read.

1. Eat fruits and vegetables - lots of them

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with healthy nutrients. Besides vitamins and minerals, they contain anti-oxidants, flavonoids, phenolic acids, resveratrol and much more. The term phytonutrients is a catch-all phrase used to refer to all of these nutrients. Thousands of phytonutrients have been identified, and we keep discovering more. This is one reason why you can never get all the nutrition you need from a pill; nature does it best.

Plants grown without pesticides or herbicides are better for us. This is a good reason to buy organic or, better yet, local produce from someone who you know doesn't spray. Plants that have to protect themselves produce more phytonutrients - which also protect us. The FDA has stated that pesticide residuals found on American plants are safe, but there is evidence to the contrary to make me question their ruling. If the higher price of organic produce is a problem, consider starting with the "dirty dozen" - the 12 fruits and vegetables that test with the highest pesticide levels. You can get the list of what has the most and least residual at http://www.ewg.org.

Finally, one big advantage of getting more fruits and vegetables is that they are filling. If you are busy getting your recommended 9 servings a day, you'll run out of room for less healthy foods. Eat a variety and include a rainbow of colors. Make an effort to include greens, the cabbage family (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts), and beans and legumes. But really - they are all good and impact our body chemistry in healthy ways.

2. Eat real food

Processed food , high in saturated and vegetable fats, is a primary source of omega-6 fats. I'll write more about these interesting fats in coming months, but for now let me just say that they increase inflammation and slow our metabolism. Inflammation increases our risks for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc, and lower metabolism makes it easier to gain weight (which in turn increases our risk for all those diseases). When you feel tempted by snack foods, junk foods, packaged foods, fried foods - remember they make your metabolism (and you) more sluggish.

Carbohydrates are also hurt by processing. The refining process strips away most of the nutrients and even though we add some of them back to enriched flour, it's not the same. We are throwing away the very nutrients that we need to digest and use those foods. The more often you can choose whole grains or carbohydrates in their original form the better. Eat an assortment of grains including steel cut oats, quinoa, barley, millet and brown, red or wild rice.

Beware of food labels. They are designed to sell food and can be misleading. Often, the foods that don't need labels (like fruits and vegetables!) are the best choices. You can buy healthy packaged foods - just choose wisely. With canned tomatoes and beans, check salt content. Get frozen vegetables without added fats or salt. Avoid products with long lists of ingredients with names you don't recognize and can't pronounce.

3. Eat moderate amounts

Eating too much at a time is the internal equivalent of a flood. It is good to spread out your eating with a regular breakfast, lunch and dinner. Add planned snacks between meals that are further than 3-5 hours apart. It is okay to be hungry before a meal, but avoid reaching the point of being ravenous. Once you reach that level of hunger, it is hard to make good choices and hard to stop eating even once you are full.

Some people like to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day. If you need to do this for health reasons and it works for you, then by all means continue doing so. But most of us end up eating too much. Multiple small meals can end up looking like continual grazing and the calories do add up.

4. Stay active

Staying active is just as important as the fuel you use. Healthy eating and exercise work best when done together. The new exercise guidelines recommend getting at least 2 ½ hours a week of aerobic exercise with strength building exercises twice a week. Most people need more than that to lose weight or maintain weight loss, but what I really like about the guidelines is that they are achievable.

If you are not currently exercising, I recommend that you get started by walking a short way nearly every day. Even if you just start with 10 minutes, start somewhere and let it become a habit. Start with an amount that is comfortable for you, that you can do without feeling pain or exhaustion. Once that is comfortable, you can begin to lengthen the time. As exercise becomes part of your routine, you may enjoy adding workouts at a local gym or taking classes for yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi. Experiment to see what you enjoy - let it be fun.

5. Get enough rest

Sleep is important. During sleep our appetite hormones are adjusted. Getting too little sleep can increase appetite, weight and inflammation. I think it is just as important to get some rest or quiet time during the day. Being tired is one of the most common reasons I hear for random eating. Taking breaks and having regular time to refresh and re-energize helps you feel centered and balanced (which makes it easier to make healthy food choices).

Sure, I make it sound easy. I know that actually living healthy habits is not very easy in today's world when we are faced with so many temptations. Keep in mind that it's all good. This is not something you can fail at; even if you do it better some days than others. Every good choice you make has value.

Plan to include your old favorites in moderation. Expect to have some days when your eating is mindless. When you notice, simply go back to your good habits. I think of it like meditation - when my mind takes over (as it always does), I just gently bring my awareness back to my breath. Try this with your habits and may this be a healthy year for you!

3 Ways to Improve Your Health

It is important for you to know about what is killing us and how we can prevent and in some cases cure these diseases. I first got interested in using alternative methods in combination with western medicine in the early 1980's when my 14 month old niece came down with what the doctors thought was pneumonia.

I stood by her bedside in the ICU and watched this beautiful little child not yet 2 years old struggling to stay alive. She was in one of the major hospitals in the country and they couldn't help her. The doctors came to my brother-in-law at one point and said that they had tried everything they knew how to do. She had been seen by all of the major hospitals in the area and they were all baffled by what was going on with her.

My brother-in-law came to me and asked what he should do. He came to me because I was the weird one in the family that was into alternative ways of healing. I suggested that he find the best holistic doctor he could and have them take a look at her. At this point, there was nothing to lose. Every time the doctors tried to get her off the medication that was keeping her alive, she would start to fail.

A holistic doctor was called in and he took tests of her hair, nails, etc. He plotted his course of treatment, she started to respond and eventually recovered from what was making her ill. The doctors at the hospital and the holistic doctor worked together to make this happen.

All of this got me to thinking about the importance of combining alternative treatments with our western medical practices. It never made sense to me that western medicine was the end all to recovery when Chinese medicine and other practices have been around for thousands of years. It is a little bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water, if we don't look at all of these practices. So over the years it has become more and more obvious to me that we need to connect these practices if we want to free ourselves from:

Stress

Hypertension

Heart Disease

Osteoporosis

And even Cancer

Oh, by the way, you may be wondering what my niece had that western medicine couldn't cure her and an alternative approach did. She had a build up of lead in her system.

I think this experience opened a number of people's eyes to the fact that there is more than one way to look at curing our diseases. The holistic practitioner that my brother-in-law got to take care of my niece was asked to speak to the doctors at this major hospital. This was an encouraging beginning.

Getting back to the use of alternative ways to increase your health, flexibility, and longevity, I can think of three proven ways to do this:

Yoga

Meditation

Pilates

Let me explain. Yoga for instance has been practiced for more than 3000 years. There must be something to it if it has been around that long. It helps you to maintain or regain your flexibility, strength, and balance. As an aging person myself, I know how important these benefits are to my well-being. This is just a drop in the bucket for the many benefits that the practice of Yoga can help you with in regaining your optimal health. It can help control or even cure the various illness that are plaguing our society today. I came across a report that showed 77 ways that the practice of Yoga will benefit us. After every report I read, it was more and more plain to me that the practice of Yoga was going to be a major part of my life. We would be crazy not to do it.

An integral part of a Yoga practice is Meditation.

I know when I meditate my day has a more balanced feel to it. The other day I was in a deep mediation, the phone rang and it brought me back to this plane rather quickly. The rest of the day I didn't quite feel like my feet or body for that matter were in this world. It was a very peaceful day although a little unreal. I guess there is a reason they tell you to meditate in a quiet place without interruptions.

I have always connected exercise with Meditation. When I exercise, I Meditate. The benefits you can get from Meditating are lowering oxygen consumption, decreases respiratory rate, Increases blood flow to mention just a few. There are so many more.

Pilates is another practice with increased benefits to your health and well-being.

What got me to start doing Pilates several times a week was when I found out that Susan Lucci of "All My Children" fame has been practicing Pilates for over 15 years. When she was on the Oprah Show she told Oprah that she is 62 years old and in my mind she looks and acts at least 20 years younger. That was all it took to get me interested.

Once I started to practice Pilates, I found that my back and joints in particular were much improved and being a 64 year old woman who is a bit over weight (working on that) it makes me feel incredible. (I am losing weight too AND getting into better shape at the same time!) What you will gain from doing Pilates are whole body fitness, it is adaptable to any fitness level, creates strength with out bulk and many more benefits.

As you can see the enormous benefits you will get from these three practices (Yoga, Meditation, and Pilates). Some of the benefits are similar with each practice. It seems to me that one improves on the other. With the research that I have done, it has been made very clear to me that in order to live a long, active, and health lifestyle, I must maintain my practice of Meditation, Yoga, and Pilates. As a senior citizen who has just started these practices in the last few years, I really wish I had started sooner but it is never too late.

Five Things You Can Do Right Now to Improve Your Health

Everyone wants to be in the best health possible. Sleeping well, having lots of energy and living a pain-free life are attainable goals for most of us. Unfortunately, there is so much confusing information available as to how we can be our healthiest, that it's hard to know where to start. Almost daily we hear about some new drug that can lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar, help you lose weight, decrease your blood pressure, ease your pain, or help whatever health condition you may have. We read about miracle foods, the perfect vitamin, tropical juices, and power drinks that are the answer to all your health concerns

Unfortunately, there is no miracle food and most medications only address the symptoms of disease; they rarely cure. Sure, you may feel better for a while, but more often than not, your symptoms return, or you need to continually take greater amounts of medications to obtain the same effectiveness.

What if there were a way to treat the source of your health problems? To make them go away and never come back. This may sound like a tall order, but it happens every day, and has been happening every day for thousands of years. An effective system of healing has been helping people like you feel their best for centuries. That system of healing is Chinese medicine.

When we think about Chinese medicine, most of us think about acupuncture, which is an important component, but acupuncture isn't the only thing that Chinese medicine has to offer. The ancient Chinese sages believed that the best way to stay healthy is through lifestyle and proper diet. Even when someone became sick, the first treatment would often be food therapy and lifestyle changes. Only if those measures failed, would they turn to acupuncture and herbs for a cure.

There are a number of life habits and dietary guidelines based on the teachings of Chinese medicine that are available to each of us. The following guidelines are simple enough, but can impact your health dramatically.

1) Eat according to Chinese food theory. Most people who are trying to improve their health give a considerable amount of thought to what they should eat. Unfortunately, as a culture, we tend to label foods as either good or bad, which has us eliminating whole food groups from our diet.

The Chinese look at food in a different way. Rather than getting bogged down in which food is good and which food is bad, they look at digestion as the key to healthy eating. The healthiest food in the world is useless if your digestion is poor.

Think of your digestive process as a pot of soup simmering over a low heat, say 98 degrees, the temperature of our body. If you add a 24 oz. frozen drink or ice cream to that pot of soup, it stops simmering, and it takes a long time for the soup to get back its warmth to continue cooking. The same is true of your digestion. When you eat or drink very cold foods, it slows your digestion and takes a lot of your internal energy to warm it up again. Eating lots of raw vegetables and fruits have a similar effect. Your energy is consumed in the digestive process.

According to Chinese theory, if you "predigest" foods by cooking them a little bit, they will be better digested and as a result, will be more easily absorbed and converted into the nutrients your body needs for good health. Ideal meals include soups, stews, and stir fries.

As for exactly what to eat, you don't have to look any further than your neighborhood Chinese restaurant for the answer. Eat lots of vegetables, a little protein, a little carbohydrate in the form of whole grains, a little fruit and small amounts of everything else. Drink warm tea or room temperature fluids with your meal.

2) Get moving. If such a thing as the fountain of youth existed, it would probably be in the form of physical activity. The benefits of a regular exercise program are endless, from improved cardiovascular health, better strength and balance, improved immunity, and relief from stress.

According to Chinese theory, moving your body also helps to move energy, which can get blocked, causing pain and illness. There is no one best way to exercise, but in order to avoid overdoing it, try to combine some vigorous movement that makes you breathe hard with one or more of the gentler forms of exercise. Yoga, stretching, Tai Qi, Qi Gong, or simply walking are all considered gentle and relaxing ways to move your body.

3) Get your stress control. There are really only two kinds of emotions: the positive kind that enhance your health, and the negative kind that drain your energy and make you susceptible to illness. The Chinese believe that the emotions are the cause of all internal illnesses. They may have something here, especially when we look at the negative impact of stress on our bodies.

Stress causes chemical reactions in your body, where certain hormones are released that can affect everything from your immune system to your digestion. Inflammatory conditions, arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even weight gain can be caused by the hormonal changes brought on by stress.

So how to get a handle on stress? We're all aware of the many methods, classes and exercises available to relieve stress. However, when you're overwhelmed with all the things on your "to do" list, one more class or exercise just becomes another stressful thing to do. The good news is that you can benefit from as little as three minutes of some kind of meditation. A couple of simple (and quick) fixes

-Breath in by expanding your rib cage and belly to a count of four. Hold to a count of seven and release by flattening your belly towards your spine to a count of eight.

-Visualize yourself in a favorite and relaxing place, which can be real or imagined. Spend a few minutes filling in all the details: what you see in every direction, sounds, smells, etc. By doing this, your brain releases the same "feel good" chemicals as if you were actually in that place.

4) Preserve your Essence. In Chinese medicine, your health and the length of your life is determined by something called Essence, or your essential life force. The strength of your Essence is determined by a combination of genetics, your physical constitution, and lifestyle.

One of the smartest ways to stay healthy is to preserve your Essence by living wisely, and not becoming run down. Some of the ways you can deplete your Essence is by overworking, not eating well, skimping on the sleep, and trying to do too many things. Also considered depleting is too much partying, having too many children and having sex too often.

Wise living means getting enough sleep to rejuvenate your body. It means working, but not too hard. Exercising too much, studying and long hours in front of a computer screen are also considered overworking. Eating adequate amounts of the right kinds of food (see above) also protect your Essence.

5) Explore Acupuncture. Acupuncture is an ancient healing system that originated in China thousands of years ago and is still successfully in practice today. It works by addressing the source of your health problem--not just by relieving symptoms. Acupuncture works by balancing energy within your body, which may sound out there and new age. However, every cell in your body produces energy in the form of ATP. The Chinese just operate on the premise that your energy moves in pathways throughout your body. When people become ill or have pain, it's because that energy is blocked in some way or it's depleted. The goal of acupuncture it to restore or maintain health by unblocking or increasing the flow of energy.

The World Health Organization has identified over sixty health conditions that acupuncture can treat, from pain to mental health conditions to digestive problems. In addition, acupuncture is a great way to maintain your good health, too. Give it a try!

Use Simple Yoga to Improve Your Health

Simple Yoga is all you need to create an excellent health-base to benefit all other sports and activities you enjoy. I have used simple Yoga techniques for 40 years and they have benefited me in my pursuit of high-level racquet sports, contact sports, outdoor activity, and many other fun pursuits. In this short article, I will show you how using and benefiting from an excellent, simple yoga plan will:

Increase core strength
Increase flexibility
Benefit body-mind balance
Generate self-control and clarity of mind

Ready to get started learning about the benefits of simple yoga? I will also give you some ideas and direction in terms of choosing your teacher or program when you arrive at the end of this article. I hope that you will have a solid, safe start to your Yoga experience.

Now, I am NOT a Yoga master or Yogi. Nope. I am a competent and confident user of this 5000 year old phenomenon, however. Without Yoga, I probably would not get out of bed in the morning. I have played some pretty rough sports like rugby and football at highly competitive levels, and now (being over 40) I am in need of a little 'oil in the joints' if you get my meaning.

Aches, pains, lethargy, depression... these are pretty common conditions amongst a lot of people in the world today. And each of these ailments are easily addressed through the use of simple Yoga techniques.

Super Short Background

Yoga dates back more than 5000 years and is a proven system of physical and mental exercise that increases physical health and mental well-being - some say spiritual health as well, but that is outside the scope of this article. At the basic levels, it is comprised of physical movements, postures, and breathing techniques. The word 'Yoga' basically means to bring together or balance in union. It is a wonderful way to center and control one-self and increase self-confidence.

The Basic Components:

Physical Movements and Postures. Broadly referred to as the use of 'asanas' for health, a simple yoga program will usually incorporate slow, graceful movements and poses that gently develop supple, strong muscles while slowly increasing flexibility. Back arches, bends, lunges, and many simple controlled stretches are part of the excellent basic Yoga program.

Breathing. When you start Yoga, you learn a lot about the vital importance of correct breathing. Now, I am pretty fit, and it might seem amazing to imagine sweating through 'breathing' alone! Simple Yoga breathing techniques get a lot of oxygen to your muscles and cells and work you out as well. The feeling of deep, controlled breathing is amazing and calming and very refreshing.

Meditation. The 'next' part of Yoga. Simple Yoga can bring the body into balance with the mind, and in doing so, things slow down. When done correctly and safely, Yoga diminishes stress and increases a sense of balanced well-being. Meditation - or the slowing and centering of calm thought - is a catalyst for these excellent benefits.

Where to and How?

There are easily thousands and thousands of resources available to the Yoga practitioner. I recommend two avenues to begin your journey.

The first is to find a reputable Yoga instructor or school in your community. I propose that you ask someone who is already benefiting from Yoga. They should look calm, relaxed, and in balance... if they do not, then find someone who is receiving the correct benefits from their simple yoga program.

The second is to look around for books or videos or combinations of both that promise to 'meet you' where you are. It is great to see a bunch of pictures of people standing on their hands and splitting their legs above their heads... but, that is not where you are. (It is not where I am or ever wish to be, either). Look for a program that incorporates an overview, the use of photos and short video clips with the written word. There are some brilliant programs out there that will bring you to the apex of your self-improvement initiatives.

Most important, though is to get started. Do so slowly, easily, and with someone or some guide that is experienced and confident. Simple yoga should be just that - simple. Yoga that is not begun easily and without stress should not be started at all.

All the best in your Yoga pursuits!

Several Methods of Physical Exercise - Which Will Help Us Improve Shape?

Playing golf requires physical fitness, ability of concentration and also positive thinking and attitude. Here are methods of exercise, which will improve your physical fitness, and positively affect strength, shape and manner, in which you employ the abilities of your body, and also the mind and emotions.

1. Aikido practice is dominated by pursuit of physical development and learning proper ways of breathing. Emphasis is placed on relaxation and concentration of energy.

2. The Pilates system emphasizes improvement of posture and body balance. Muscles are also strengthened. Proper use of muscles in everyday activities will improve functioning of the entire body, and will also enhance mental performance: your concentration ability and clarity of thinking will benefit. As Pilates grows in popularity, Pilate classes are being offered not only at specialized studios but also at gyms, health clubs, spas, rehabilitation clinics, senior facilities and community centers around the world.

3. Hatha Yoga: Performing positions, which allow for attainment of perfect body functioning, leading to better control of the mind and emotions.

4. Judith Aston therapy: The purpose of this therapy is to assist people in determination and recognition of habitual movements, developed due to stress, and subsequently to use body "intelligence" to find easier and more effective behavior models.

5. Tai-chi: Art of motion-related meditation; covers the physical and mental sphere. Exercises improve powers of concentration, provides grace, relaxation and ability of concentration.

The benefits of Tai-chi are realized on several levels: as a physical exercise for fitness and health, as a tool to relieve stress, as a spiritual exercise.

Yoga For Beginners - Improve Your Mind, Body and Spirit

Yoga for beginners is for everyone all ages, shapes and sizes. You first start out in Yoga as a novice and progress upwards until you are a master in the art.

In my opinion I call it an art as Yoga for beginners is about a combination of exercise combined with meditation and therefore it is much more than just running on a treadmill or lifting some weights. In fact the exercises associated with Yoga are not in the modern sense traditional, you don't need to go down the gym but I would advise those of you newbies to go to a qualified instructor to start with. Exercises involve postures and balance plus controlled breathing as opposed to strength and speed or aerobic type training in other disciplines.

It is important for me to point out the fact that there are many different types of Yoga out there. They all have the same aim in mind and that is to improve mind, body and spirit. Some emphasize more or less on different on the main areas such as meditation, nutrition or exercise. The most common form in the Western world is Hatha Yoga. This has come about due to the fact it is the most applicable to our western culture and westerners associate more readily with the methods involved.

I would suggest before beginning Yoga you briefly investigate the different varieties and pick the one that most matches in with your lifestyle.

If you don't have a local class you can go to then Yoga for beginners can be learned through instructional DVDs, books and multimedia as well as online. So it is easy to start. You don't really need any equipment. Although a good yoga mat or yoga blanket is recommended. When you are ready to begin find a quiet spot in your house and follow the exercise plan you have decided upon. Can't be easier than that!

Some people prefer relaxing music when practicing their yoga meditation and exercises. Normally yoga is done without shoes or socks on but there are special socks you can buy that don't slip if you prefer. All forms of Yoga give benefits to health. They combine the elements of exercise through postures, controlled breathing exercises and meditation as previously mentioned but you need to be clear what Yoga is ultimately about. Regular practice is great for strengthening mind and body.

Beginners of Yoga, will find almost immediate benefit when starting and this can very often be seen within the first two weeks or even less. Most people are surprised by the quick results they achieve within such a short time.

Yoga for beginners is like everything else that involves movement of the body. You should always start with a gentle warm up. Stretching gently is also important. Find a place where you won't be disturbed. The length of time required varies and can depend greatly upon the level you are on. I personally use on average around 1/2 hour a day. When you do it is up to you. For me the best time is first thing in the morning but this is not always possible in the week so after work is my usual time.

To get the most out of Yoga it should become part of your lifestyle. Many beginners in Yoga find it helps them to unwind and relax. They find it invigorating and calming. It also improves their body's suppleness and muscular tonality.

There is yoga for kids, yoga for pregnant women so it really is practically for everyone. If your aims are to lower your stress and have more energy, improve your body strength and much more then I would urge you to contemplate Yoga for beginners is where you should kick off.

Improve Your Body and Mind With YOGA

If this is your first introduction to yoga, you are about to learn that it is much more than an exercise regime. It could be your first step toward the liberating journey of self-realization. It is known that the body, spirit and mind are intertwined, and bringing them into balance and harmony is the ultimate goal of yoga. With all the stress and turmoil involved in modern day living, there has never been a more urgent need to bring a sense of balance and harmony to our lives.

At the "beginner" level, yoga is an easy and enjoyable way of learning certain postures and breathing exercises to increase strength as well as how to begin letting go of negative thoughts to bring about an inner calmness. The deep breathing and physical exercises will help you to deal with a variety of illnesses, including high blood pressure, pain in the joints and muscles, anxiety, postural problems, weight problems, and even poor elimination. Getting rid of negativity is important because these negative thoughts are stored in our bodies and disrupt the balance of health. The aging process is accelerated by stress, poor diet and a negative attitude. By purifying our body and keeping it supple, we can reduce cell deterioration.

You need not be concerned about your age or fitness level. Yoga is truly for everyone. The most important factor is a commitment to you. Whether you choose to practice on your own or in a class, it's important to work at a pace you are comfortable with. The benefits are limited only by the time and effort you are willing to spend.

There are many forms of yoga. Hatha (meaning sun and moon) yoga is the most popular in this part of the world. It concentrates on the theory that gaining control over the body is the key to controlling the mind. The postures emphasize balancing opposing forces in the body such as forward bends followed by backward bends, standing postures followed by inversions, left movements followed by movements to the right etc. Your particular path to getting started may be to read up on the philosophy and history of yoga. Or you may want to get an audio or visual program to teach you how to do the postures and breathing exercises. Another plan would be to join a class for proper guidance and the social aspect. Some basic guidelines to keep in mind are: Find a quiet place to practice (no phone, tv, etc) to distract you. You'll need a mat or carpet for comfort. Wear comfortable clothing and leave your feet bare. Do not eat a heavy meal before starting.

It is important that you progress at your own pace. Yoga is not about competition or guilt. Any amount that you can comfortably do will be a step in the right direction. No matter how out of shape or inflexible you are, with a little practice, you'll soon feel increased vitality and a sense of well- being. Instead of worrying about "find the time" it will become an enjoyable part of your life.

Can Chair Yoga Improve Senior Mobility?

For all the benefits it offers, Yoga practitioners are unsurprised at how quickly the practice of Yoga has spread in the last two decades, particularly among aging populations. In a time when people are living longer and healthier lives, many practitioners and instructors see Yoga as an excellent resource for pain management and healthy maintenance or remediation of muscles and joints.

Since Yoga is so highly adaptable - a style known as, Chair Yoga, has also become more popular among its practitioners. Yoga in a chair is an adaptation of more traditional schools of Yoga, such as Hatha, because it offers more support and requires less flexibility, strength, and mobility from its practitioners. Yet, since it is still a series of Yoga techniques and poses, it also offers practitioners the opportunity to increase range of motion, gain balance, and improve muscle health.

As we age, those of us who are less physically active, may notice that our muscles become tighter and less flexible, which results in decreased mobility, aches, muscle tears, strains, and joint trouble. Seniors, who are not physically active, are more prone to injuries, falls, and pain, which makes moving difficult. This is one more reason why Chair Yoga is a perfect form of exercise. Not only does Yoga increase blood flow to the muscles and extremities to improve circulation, but it also lengthens and strengthens muscles to relieve pressure on painful joints.

Many seniors believe they are unable to practice Yoga because their physical limitations might prevent them from performing certain poses, particularly balance or floor poses. With that said, Chair Yoga offers a proven method to stay safe from injuries, while still improving mobility and strength.

A senior, who is unable to sit on the ground, for example, can adapt a simple pranayama technique to Yoga in a chair, improving lung capacity and relieving stress. Another senior, with osteoporosis, might adapt a balancing pose, by using the chair for support; over time, he or she will gain balance, strength, and coordination.

Another benefit, which Chair Yoga offers, includes therapeutic techniques to improve pain management or to strengthen areas of previous injury or aggravation. Especially as it relates to seniors, looking to improve mobility, Chair Yoga is a form of pain management, which is a well-known advantage of practicing Yoga. Seniors, with back or neck pain, can stretch their spines and the lower back muscles, through chair adaptations of forward bends or the Sun Salutation series. Of course, potential students who have mobility issues should seek out a competent chair Yoga teacher. Once the basics are learned, and mobility is enhanced, one should always be careful to warm up thoroughly before practicing independently.
