A Holistic Approach to Yoga

Yoga is a unified approach to self-development which is designed to balance and harmonize physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being. While some practitioners of Yoga display extreme flexibility, the heart of Yoga is less dramatic and can be practiced by people of all ages and all levels. Yoga has its roots in the Hindu culture of India. However, the practice of Yoga is nonsectarian promoting health and harmonious living. The word "Yoga" means to join together" or "unite". Thus, Yoga is a process of integrating and balancing body, mind and spirit. Many of us live in a disjointed manner as our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs struggle with each other creating frustration and confusion rather than fulfillment.

To achieve this union, Yoga combines physical postures, movements, mental concentration, deep breathing, meditation, relaxation and good nutrition. In practicing Yoga, the body is consciously moved with utmost care into various specific poses (asanas) accompanied by deep rhythmic breathing. The word "asana" comes from a word that means "easy". The purpose of the posture is to bring you to "ease" in your body through a combination of stretching, holding, breathing, balance, resistance and mindfulness.

Various poses may help reduce and in some cases relieve various physical symptoms. These symptoms include arthritis, asthma, breathing disorders, back/neck problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, headaches, heart disease, infertility, insomnia, pain, PMS, menopause and weight management.

Yoga benefits both the external and internal physical body. Muscles develop tone and strength while flexibility, balance, coordination and energy levels are increased. Glands, nerves, tissues, internal organs and the nervous system are affected in a positive and healthy manner.

One of the muscles Yoga benefits is the heart. Increasing blood volume through the heart reduces blood pressure. Typically in the West we increase blood flow through aerobic exercise. However, certain inverted postures e.g. shoulder stands, and headstands cause more blood to pass through the heart when upside down. Other postures use and squeeze the muscles by crossing the legs, arching the back, kneeling and twisting. Using muscles in this manner demands oxygen from the blood and circulatory system. Yoga improves blood circulation bringing more oxygen and nutrients to every cell, tissue and organ. Poor circulation leads to under-oxygenated, malnourished, polluted cells and as a result poor organ function.

The poses, accompanied by deep breathing, stimulates regeneration and rejuvenation retarding the aging process. The manner in which these movements are performed is an essential element. Yoga is never goal-oriented, forceful, judgmental or competitive but rather a process or life-long journey. In essence, Yoga is a positive approach leading to enhanced fulfillment, self-awareness, peace and quality of life.

How Yoga Is More Holistic Than Other Stretches

You can use many kinds of stretches to loosen your muscles and your body. Typical, traditional stretches involve stretching muscles one at a time. This is often done before or after a work-out.

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is another type of stretching. When you practice a PNF stretch for a muscle, you use the help of other muscles to enable you to get a deeper stretch.

There are a few other styles of stretching, including assisted and partner stretches, but yoga may be the most holistic type.

Yoga Roots.

Yoga is an ancient art. It has been practiced for thousands of years, with origins in India. It was developed as a lifestyle practice to keep the body and mind flexible.

It was originally developed by upper-class citizens, which is why yogic names and expressions are in Sanskrit. It was developed as an elitist language, but traditions have not dropped it from modern-day yoga practice "for the common man".

Yoga was developed as a system, practiced for health and vitality. Because of its many health benefits, it is considered Ayurvedic medicine.

Ayurveda is the world's oldest system of medicine, dating back seven thousand years. It is practiced heavily in many Far Eastern countries. Health practitioners in the U.S. are new to understanding and practicing Ayurveda.

Health benefits of Yoga.

A yoga session is a kind of meditation. Throughout parts of the meditation, you may be focused on breathing. Other times you might be focused on clearing your mind, and filling your body with positive thoughts.

During most yoga sessions, the majority of your time is spent in a moving meditation.

You focus on a series of movements to stretch your muscles in different ways. You may pause and concentrate on the proper technique for an asana, or pose. Or you may keep movements more fluid, briefly pausing before moving to the next asana.

Some of the health benefits from regular yoga practice include:

Improved mood and energy

Reduced anxiety

Enhanced relaxation

Improved sleep

Increased blood flow

Loosening muscles

Physical tension relief

Reduced emotional stress

Many of these benefits are common to all types of exercise. But stretching does not provide the same benefits of cardiovascular or strength training, so it is important to include those in a well-rounded exercise program.

The holistic nature of yoga.

Yoga is a dynamic form of movement. First, unlike other types of stretching that isolate muscles, stretching one at a time, yoga is based on asanas. Asanas are poses, or postures. To perform most asanas, you need to focus on holding several muscles in a stretched and balanced position.

Yoga is also unique in that it involves multi-directional stretching. Stretches, exercises, and sports are more dynamic when they involve movement in multiple planes, or directions. Multi-directional exercise is beneficial because many everyday activities use movements that are multi-directional.

Furthermore, yoga loosens muscles with specific focus on tension areas. For example, "hip opener" asanas release tension in a way that allows great amounts of circulation and energy to flow from the upper body to the lower body. Around our shoulders, our thoracic outlet is an area that can get tense from overuse and typical poor posture. By stretching these "tension traps", we can release improve the flow of chi throughout the whole body, also called "releasing chakras".

Yoga is dynamic, using several muscles in multi-directional movement. Combined with its effect on improving circulation through tension areas, yoga may be a powerful holistic therapy.

The Purpose of Yoga - Holistic Health

What is the true purpose of Yoga? Yoga encompasses many holistic aspects, but Yoga's true purpose is to prevent suffering in this life. Yoga is a system, which enables a practitioner to be pro-active about his or her complete health.

Yoga instills complete empowerment within the practitioner. If we could end suffering, that would be better, but mankind seems to always find new paths for self-abuse.

Each style of Yoga will have a subtle difference from a similar style, but health is always the aim in all forms of Yoga. Superiority of method is an illusion, since all Yogic paths lead to better mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health.

The need to sort, prioritize, and judge Yoga styles, and aspects of Yoga, is an example of our limited mental perceptions. The reality is we make these same mistakes when the mind is not disciplined and our comprehension is challenged to its limits.

It is possible to miss the entire purpose of Yoga, if the mind is not trained and tutored properly. How many students will discipline themselves without the guidance of a Yoga teacher? How many Yoga teachers see Asana as the "Holy Grail" of Yoga?

The "monkey mind" will not be disciplined without pranayama (Yogic breathing techniques), meditation, and japa (repetition of mantra). A Yoga teacher, or student, can practice an untutored form of Yoga, but to practice without guidance is not a holistic approach.

A Yoga devotee cannot usually transcend beyond the superficial aspects of Yoga without guidance. For example: Look at the covers of most Yoga publications. If I want to sell more Yoga magazines, I have to put Yoga on display. There is a saying: "A picture is worth a thousand words," but one picture of an "advanced" Yoga asana, will intimidate some members of the public.

How many people, in the west, think that a Yoga teacher must be thin, young, extremely flexible, muscular, and physically gifted? Most of the non-practicing public believes this, and many Hatha Yoga students believe it. Worse yet, some Yoga teachers have a narrow-minded view of Yoga, as a stricly physical recreation, similar to gymnastics.

Recently, I was addressing an audience in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, about the benefits of Chair Yoga. One member of the audience raised her hand and asked, "What is the most important physical exercise in Yoga?" My answer was that if you are only looking at the physical aspect of Yoga, Pranayama is the most important exercise, but there is much more to Yoga than physical exercise.

Even though my answer went into great length about the aspects and benefits of Yoga, a gentleman later told me than he would have imagined the Headstand (Salamba Sirsasana) was the most important aspect of Yoga. My reply was, "Did you ever take a Yoga class?" He admitted that it was the fear of doing a headstand, which kept him away from trying a Yoga class.

Now, unless Yoga teachers explain the holistic health benefits of a steady Yoga practice to the public, decades will pass by and these myths will flourish.

Holistic Healing Practices - Defined - Jin Shin Jyutsu through Yoga

Jin Shin Jyutsu: Jin Shin Jyutsu is the art of releasing the tensions which cause various symptoms of discomfort in our bodies. Our bodies contain numerous energy pathways or meridians that feed life into all our cells. When one or more of these paths become blocked, this blockage may lead to discomfort or even severe pain. This stoppage or stagnation may not only disrupt a local area, but can persist and eventually cause disharmony to all paths of energy flows, leading to more severe ailments. In a Jin Shin Jyutsu treatment the specialist's hands are used as 'jumper cables' to energize the body's run-down battery. This reopens the energy pathways, to release pain, disease and stress. Stresses such as injuries, emotional and natural tensions, digestive disorders, genetic (inherited) and surgery all contribute to having blockages. A single treatment lasts about one hour and will continue to release energy for an additional eight hours, healing, balancing and relaxing the body. Jin Shin Jyutsu can assist in releasing almost any problem, because of the powerful unblocking that occurs as it opens the deeper universal meridians.

Jin Shin Therapies: Jin Shin Therapies, ancient oriental healing arts, use touch on specific points on the body to release blockages of energy, thereby harmonizing and revitalizing the body on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

Kinesiology: Kinesiology involves the testing of various muscles and nerves of the body in order to determine the strength or weakness of various organ and energetic systems. It can also be used to determine how receptive the body is to various remedies and therapies, thereby assisting with the restoration of optimal health.

Labyrinths: The Labyrinths was used in the early mystery schools to achieve balance and enlightenment and has been recently rediscovered to assist in the raising of our consciousness. It is an ancient tool thought to bring balance, healing, spiritual awakening, and protection. Learn how this design, found in many ancient cultures, is a path to center. It can bring about deep insight and new ways of perceiving the challenges of life.

Light Therapy: Light Therapies are a form of bodywork that uses gentle, pumping movements to break up blockage in the lymphatic system while speeding up the flow of lymphatic fluid. This action cleanses the body of waste and has been shown to restore fluid balance while strengthening the immune system. Lymphatic Drainage can be accomplished manually or with specific equipment.

Magnets/Magnetic Therapy: Magnets & Magnetic Therapy utilize magnets and electromagnet fields for the treatments of numerous conditions including fractures, pain, arthritis, circulatory problems and many others.

Massage Therapy: Massage Therapy is an effective broad-based system of remedial treatment consisting of kneading, rubbing and otherwise manipulating a part or the whole body with the hands. Although not limited to, Massage Therapy focuses mainly on muscles, organs and lymphatic tissue.

Meditation: Meditation has been utilized for thousands of years to bring about integration of mind, body and spirit. Similar to guided imagery, meditation has shown beneficial results on a wide range of conditions, from hypertension and immune enhancement to asthma, stress reduction and pain management.

Mind/Body/Spirit/Emotions: Mind/Body/Spirit/Emotions is an emerging field of health care that deals with the total effects of thought, physical body, emotional and spiritual aspects of humans and their effect on chronic conditions such as cancer, chronic fatigue, AIDS, lupus, fibromyalgia, diabetes, mitral valve prolapse, MS, PMS, TMJ, Parkinson's Disease, and mental health. This broadening field of 'wholeness' includes a wide range of disciplines including biofeedback, guided imagery, meditation, hypnosis, regression, past life regression, and many others.

Myofascial Release: Myofascial Release addresses the connective tissue that runs throughout the body. Because connective tissue can become strained or damaged, myofascial release can bring relief for those suffering from chronic pain, physical dysfunction or bodily injury, as well as surgery and postural misalignment.

Myotherapy: Myotherapy is manual massage and pressure on sensitive spots of the body known as 'trigger points' to relieve chronic pain and disease, such as arthritis and multiple scleroisis.

Naturopathy: Naturopathy is a system based upon natural principles of health and a deep respect for the healing power of nature. A growing field of holistic health care, Naturopathy focuses on the underlying cause of disease and blends centuries-old natural, non-toxic therapies with current advances in the study of health and human systems, covering all aspects of family health from prenatal to geriatric care.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a behavioral technology utilizing a set of guiding principles, attitudes and techniques about real life behavior. NLP allows you to change, adopt or eliminate behaviors, as you desire, and gives you the ability to choose your mental, emotional and physical states of well-being. NLP is used to enhance interpersonal skills, communication and rapport' in business to improve management and sales; in education to improve student performance and achievement and to enhance personal development and effectiveness.

Neuromuscular Therapy: Neuromuscular Therapy is a comprehensive program of soft tissue manipulation that balances the body's central nervous system with the musculoskeletal system. Based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system initiates and maintains pain, the goal is to relieve the pain and dysfunction by alleviating the underlying cause. NMT emphasizes the role of the brain, spine, and nerves in muscular pain. It uses advanced concepts in pressure therapy to break the stress-tension-pain cycle. It aims to relax muscle and release compressed nerves so that circulation can increase and the body will return to normal neuromuscular integrity and balance.

Oriental Medicine: Traditional Oriental Medicine (TOM)--a.k.a. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)--is the oldest continuously practiced medicine in the world. More than one-fourth of the world's population now uses one or more of the many therapies and treatments offered through TOM. These therapies and treatments include acupuncture, herbs, massage, meditation and a wide variety of other energy related therapies such as Qi Gong and Tai Chi.

Oxygen/Ozone Therapy: Oxygen/Ozone Therapy is a rapidly growing treatment that dates back a hundred years to Germany and includes hydrogen peroxide therapy, ozone therapy (HVOT) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to treat a wide range of ailments and disorders, and to assist in detoxifying the body.

Pilates: Pilates is a full-body exercise system that emphasizes body alignment and correct breathing system using the abdomen, lower back and buttocks as a power center. Pilates enables the rest of the body to move freely. You experience a new awareness as your mind is directed through your body's movement. These frequencies provide an experience that differs from anything previously encountered. People report experiencing healings cancer, AIDS-related disease and other serious illnesses.

Reflexology: Reflexology is a method of healing and balancing through the manipulation and stimulation of reflex areas located in the hands and feet. These areas correspond to all areas of the body providing effective treatment for pain and a variety of ailments.

Regression Therapy: Regression therapy takes the individual to hypnotically regressed point in their current life or a previous life. A, (preferably certified regression) practitioner discusses with the person what they wish to accomplish. They may, for example, believe that a fear of water, not based on any known traumatic experience, might be based on death by drowning in a previous life, or they may wish to know whether they knew their spouse in past life. The regression practitioner then takes the person back in time to current or previous life experiences. Regressing to a previous experience is powerful healing and cathartic, because the feelings associated with the experience, whether in one's current or past life, can be processed . In a past life experience, it often includes dramatic events of death, loss, betrayal, or deep love and happiness. The person often finds themselves in a body of a different gender, age, or race. The function of the whole experience is to heal past traumas by understanding, forgiving and being forgiven. Understanding the roots of a phobia, illness, accident, or even birthmark is very helpful to getting on with the business of the current lifetime. For instance, a person who starved in a previous lifetime can let go of the urge to overeat when it is understood as no longer relevant. A person who has an abusive relationship can let go of it when they understand that the karma binding them to the other person is that the other person caused their death in a previous life. It is not necessary to suffer further when this is understood. Past life regression hypnosis has extremely fast results in healing of self-defeating behaviors, or understanding potential areas of achievement which may have past-life roots.

Reiki: Reiki ('Rei'--universal energy and 'Ki'--the life force that flows through every living thing) is a energy-based system of bodywork. Treatment consists of the use of the practitioner's hands to stimulate and infuse energy to the recipient to expedite the healing process. Reiki is a safe, non-invasive, non-manipulative therapy commonly used to help reduce stress and revitalize energy.

Rolfing®: Rolfing is the original form of structural integration Dr. Ida P. Rolf perfected 60 years ago. It is a holistic approach based on the recognition that we function better at many levels when our bodies are properly aligned in gravity. The goal of Rolfing is to create a body that is effortlessly upright, properly aligned, and at ease with itself and gravity. Some of the results are long lasting freedom from pain and stress as well as improvement in function at every level including improved range of motion, joint integrity, and overall sense of well-being.

Shiatsu: Shiatsu means 'finger pressure.' It involves a sequence of rhythmic pressures firmly applied to specific body points. It is designed to balance the acupuncture meridians of the body while increasing wellness, treating pain and various other ailments.

Sound Therapy: Sound Therapy is based on the idea that sound can influence health by its balancing, calming and energizing effects on the brain and nervous system. Sound Therapy has become widely accepted in hospitals, clinics and schools throughout the world as an effective treatment to alleviate pain, overcome various learning disabilities, improve strength and endurance, as well as improve movement and balance. http://www.soundmindbodyhealing.com

The counter-statements are then programmed in at the cellular level which results in the release of those discordant emotional themes from one's life giving us the freedom to move forward in a whole new manner. Most people report that core attitudes towards life noticeable change. Children with ADD or ADHD respond dramatically positively to SBR, as wel as people with major self-punishing or self-destructive tendencies.

Spiritual Response Therapy (SRT): Spiritual Response Therapy allows fro definitively addressing many of the emotional issues/patterns limiting one's life. Through SRT, the emotional programs that are running at the cellular level of an individual are identified and an 'educational' process begins at the soul level which allows the programs to be resolved. This releases tremendous emotional baggage, enabling each person the freedom to explore life in a new manner, unconstrained by many of the old patterns and routines, which were previously governing their lives. It is a useful tool in releasing anxiety, depression, phobias, addictions, suicidal behavior patterns, and often effective in releasing health challenges and physical disabilities. SRT allows for greater quality in relationships, freedom from limiting emotional issues and a greater inner-peace and inner-harmony in dealing with life.

Structural Integration: Structural Integration work is based on the concept that human function is improved when segments of the body (head, torso, pelvis, legs and feet) are properly aligned. Practitioners use carefully applied pressure to help reorganize tissue while realigning the body. Structural Integration offers its own unique therapy--not be construed as chiropractic care.

Tai Chi: Tai Chi consist of graceful, continuous movements combined with breathing control to promote relaxation, balance, flexibility, muscle tone, and coordination while improving overall physical and mental agility. Tai Chi teaches the cultivation, balancing and focusing of internal energy (chi). This ancient art dates back to the 8th century and is based on traditional defensive and offensive techniques. In addition to bare hand techniques, weapons such as the sword, saber and spear are also used. Several schools of Tai Chi include the Chen, Yang, Wu and Sun. Tai Chi has been used as part of treatments for back problems, ulcers and stress.

Total Body Modification (TBM): Total Body Modification is a hand on healing practice which is an off shoot of chiropractic medicine. It essentially treats the body as having a 'health-computer,' tests the circuits to identify which are improperly programmed, corrects the programming, and then, 're-boots' the computer so the new patterns are fully operational. Many people with pneumonia, knee/joint problems, chronic cough, adrenal weakness, reversed polarity, herpes, sunburn sensitivity, etc. have experienced lasting relief with TBM.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)--a.k.a. Traditional Oriental Medicine (TOM):--is the oldest continuously practiced medicine in the world. More than one-fourth of the world's population now uses one or more of the many therapies and treatments offered through TCM. These therapies and treatments include acupuncture, herbs, massage, meditation and a wide variety of other energy related therapies such as Qi Gong and Tai Chi.

Trauma Resolution: Effective Trauma Resolution approaches seek to release the physical and emotional pain of overwhelming experiences--a.k.a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

At the moment of an overwhelming experience the nervous system subconsciously and automatically induces an altered state to protect and calm the system. When left unresolved in the cells and fields of the body, these static energies foster depression, anxiety, disease and compulsivity. New strategies--such as: Regression Therapy, Spiritual Brain Repatterning (SBR), Spiritual Restructuring, Spiritual Response Therapy (SRT) address these powerful moments of encoding.

Watsu: Watsu--a.k.a Water Shiatsu--is a form of massage performed in chest high, body-temperature water. A Watsu practitioner guides the individual through a series of dance-like movements, while using Zen Shiatsu techniques in order to release blockages in the body's meridians-energy pathways. Watsu is commonly used to relieve tension and stress, pain, arthritis and a wide variety of emotional and physical problems.

Yoga: Yoga is an ancient Indian system of spirituality, health and longevity, which utilizes various physical postures, breathing exercises, meditation and life-style considerations to bring about a state of balanced health and well-being. Numerous studies have shown that Yoga, Yoga Therapy and meditation have positive health benefits on a wide range of conditions including headaches, stress, pain, asthma, high blood pressure and numerous other health issues.

Acupressure: Acupressure uses the pressure of the fingers and hands and is utilized effectively for tension related elements.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture uses small needles to penetrate and stimulate specific points in the body to restore normal functions and energetic balance. Acupuncture is now a widely accepted form of treatment throughout the world and is practiced in both hospitals and private practice.

Anti-Aging: Aging process can be slowed, suspended and in some cases reversed. Acupuncture came about as a shift in thinking from aging as an inevitable process to aging as a series of disease processes. Aging processes can be measured, and as with any disease, there are symptoms and treatments. Anti-aging is a comprehensive practice of preventive care, but goes beyond them utilizing specific high-tech testing procedures and treatments.

Applied Kinesiology: Applied Kinesiology (AK) tests the Chi or energy by taking a strong indicator muscle, any strong muscle, and asking the person to lock their muscle as the practitioner challenges the strength of that muscle by pushing or pulling the area to see if it will hold. The practitioner might ask the person to hold his/her arm straight out in front and lock it while the practitioner with an open hand firmly pushes down on the arm right above the wrist. This is a check to see if the arm will hold. Any major muscle will work for muscle testing. The arm being able to hold is a signal the body is free of dis-ease or distress. If the arm is unable to hold is a signal there is a weakness in the system. Kinesiology testing is required to determine the cause of the dis-ease or distress.

Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy is the art and science of using the essential oil of botanical plants for the treatment of ailments, illness and disease. Various therapeutic grade essential oils are utilized without side effects. These oils can be inhaled, applied topically and, in some cases, ingested. In many countries aromatherapy is highly respected as a system of holistic health care.

Ayurvedic Medicine: Ayurvedic Medicine is an ancient medicine, which evolved among the Brahmin sages of ancient India. Ayurveda is from the roots "ayur" meaning life and "veda" meaning knowledge. There are a variety of biofeedback devices and procedures, most of which incorporate relaxation and stress reduction. Some assist the client to control or modify specific autonomic activities through relaxation and visualization techniques. Others provide automatic correcting energetic signals that balance the body. The goal of biofeedback is to help the body heal itself.

Bodywalking: Bodywalking allows the practitioner to apply sustained and significant pressure. The Bodywalker can put all of his weight on the client or less. The clients muscle will eventually release and relax allowing more of the Bodywalker's weight to be distributed in that area.

Cellular Memory Clearing: The human body is 100% memory. While a certain percentage of this is physiological and environmental in origin, much is acquired from learned experience. Though we do not yet fully comprehend the mechanisms of storage, we do know that memory is stored site specifically at traumatic moments, a phenomenon we call 'somatic' or 'body memory.' Various contemporary approaches seek to address this encoded memory in the cells and membrane linings of the body.

Chelation Therapy: Chelation Therapy is a painless and simple process that involves intravenous drips of EDTA to remove toxins, lead and heavy metals from the blood. Chelation offers less invasive treatment to surgery and angioplasty. It has also been shown to help poor leg circulation as well as reduce high blood pressure and reverse age-related degenerative conditions while improving the overall quality of life.

Chiropractic: Chiropractic care utilizes the technique of adjusting spinal vertebrae to restore the proper flow of the nerve impulses. Doctors of Chiropractic consider a spine free of misalignment and the free-flow of nerves to all areas of the human body essential in maintaining optimum health. A variety of approaches and techniques are utilized n the filed of chiropractic care. A variety of approaches and techniques are utilized in the field of chiropractic care.

Color Therapy: Color Therapy utilizes light(s) and liquids to help treat a variety of emotional, mental, physical and/or spiritual conditions. Color Therapy is also used to treat pain and depression. Syntonic Optometry has shown favorable results in altering neuron-chemical production in the brain.

Cranio Sacral Therapy: Cranio Sacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle method of evaluating and correcting dysfunction of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Practitioners aim to release restrictions in order to dissipate stress on the central nervous system. CST helps alleviate pain, release physical and emotional trauma, and enhance the body's overall ability to heal itself.

Dentistry--Biological and Holistic: Biological Dentistry stress the use of non-toxic restoration materials while focusing on the unrecognized impact that dental toxins and hidden dental infections can have on overall health. According to those who specialize in this field, cavities, infections, toxic or allergy producing filing materials, root canals and misalignment of the teeth or jaws can have far-reaching effects throughout the body.

To distinguish between the two types of doulas, they are referred to as 'birth doulas' and 'postpartum doulas.'

Essential Oils: Essential Oils or 'essences' as they are also called, are highly concentrated substances extracted from various parts of aromatic plants, and trees. They are usually captured by steam distillation, a process whose origins can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia. Unlike ordinary vegetable oils, such as corn and olive, plant essences are highly volatile and will evaporate if left in the open air. Most consist of hundreds of components, such as terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes and esters. For reason a single oil can help a wide variety of disorders. Lavender, for example, is endowed with antiseptic, antibacterial, antibiotic, antidepressant, analgesic, decongestant and sedative properties. Moreover, due to their tiny molecular structure, essential oils applied to the skin or inhaled into the lungs can be absorbed into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body.

Feldenkrais Method: The Feldenkrais Method is an educational approach to human ability and self-exploration. Through the use of active and passive movements, students can explore the relationships between movement and the way one acts in the world. The complete comfort of the iso-thermal supportive bath in the dark and in silence affords a complete physical, mental, spiritual resting place. By shielding the body and mind from external 'environmental' stimulation, the tank reduces its workload by up to 90%, conserving vast amounts of energy, which is then redirected inwards. The effect is called the parasympathetic response, or Relaxation Response.

Flower Essences and Remedies: Flower essences promote change and help people to access feelings. Pure energy of flowers, preserved in water (like homeopathic formulas) are used as catalysts for reducing stress, unblocking energy and enhancing health.
