One of yoga's many benefits is that it will help to increase your ability to find your space, harmony, inner peace and ease within your body and mind. As your practice of yoga progresses, you'll become less overwhelmed and be comfortable taking on more of the challenging poses, but as a beginner, it's a good idea to keep your yoga practice simple. However, don't jump right into any fancy yoga exercises before you've been to a few yoga classes. It can take years to learn the various yoga positions, but there are exercises that are appropriate and helpful for beginner students too.

A few standing yoga poses for beginners - both in English and Sanskrit include the following:

Extended Sides Angle Pose is used to create a stretch along the top side of the body, from the back heel through the raised arm. The need to match a stretch along the underside of the torso is often neglected.

Pyramid Pose Intense Stretch Pose - Parsvottanasana

The Pyramid Pose is said to strengthen and stretch the entire leg and back regions, strengthens and tones the abdomen; improves the digestive system, massages the liver and stomach and improves the complexion, hair, eyes and cools the brain.

Mountain Pose - Tadasana

The Mountain Pose is said to be named so as it promotes the experience of stillness, strength, relaxed power, and immovable stability associated with mountains.

Of course there many, many more yoga poses for beginners, these will get you started and you can get the feel of it. Yoga can be invigorating even if using it's practice just to obtain physical fitness but it can bring more insight into yourself, those around you and a deeper understanding into life itself. Yoga Your Way to Physical and Mental Fitness

Although considered by many simply as an exercise fad, yoga practice has in fact helped thousands of people in improving their physical and mental fitness. Remember the golden rule of never judging a book by its cover; if you think that yoga's all about bending and breathing and nothing else, think again.

The History of Yoga

The practice of yoga has been around for more than four thousand years already. Its origins can be traced back to India where even today, it is considered as a highly valued practice to reach a state of enlightenment. Yoga as a means to receive enlightenment is a central point in several religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

In other parts of the world, the popularity of yoga is caused by its many health benefits and its associated use with asanas (postures) of Hatha Yoga as fitness exercises.

Purpose of Yoga and Its Main Components

Besides reaching a spiritual state of enlightenment, yoga can also help individuals reach a better understanding of not only their bodies but their inner selves as well.

When practicing yoga, you'll notice that you'll be concentrating on three main points:

Body Positioning or Posture

Breathing Techniques

Meditating Techniques

Advantages of Yoga

Treating Back Injuries - yoga can heal back injuries that you may have by increasing the blood circulation for your injured tissues to heal faster and strengthening your lower back muscles; yoga may also in several cases heal other types of injuries as well

Prevention - Yoga also has the power to reduce chances of re-injuring yourself, shorten the time needed to recover from injuries and serve as a regular exercise technique to prevent disabilities

Mental Clarity and Improved Stress Control - The quiet and deeply relaxing techniques used in yoga would help you have a better state of mind every day at work and better control of your stress levels

Greater Self-Understanding and General Well-Being - Find yourself amazed with how much at peace you feel with yourself when you start practicing yoga regularly

Generally Better Physical Health - Besides getting that ideal toned figure you've been aiming for, yoga will also help in refreshing your kidneys and maintain a better posture

Better Sleep - Rediscover the simple pleasures of sleeping with the help of yoga.

Beginner's Tips for Yoga Practice

Consult Your Doctor - Before launching on to the first yoga step you encounter, make sure that your doctor gives you the go-ahead to do so. Yes, it's true that anyone can technically do yoga but there are certain difficult poses that would be impossible or dangerous to attempt if you are troubled with past injuries or disabilities.

Just to be on the safe side, talk to your doctor and ask him if you can yoga your way to having a sexy figure or not.

Classes or Private Lessons - When you're determined to join a yoga class, make sure that you're joining a class whose level fits yours. Make sure that you join the class on the first day as well to avoid feelings of insecurity when you see others being able to tackle new yoga poses that boggle the mind. Secondly, choose a class schedule that you can regularly adhere to. If you only attend a class or two every two months, that's sort of defeating the point of joining a class in the first place. Lastly, choose the type of yoga class that fits your taste and abilities.

On the other hand, if you're not the social type, you can always attempt yoga practice at home and with the comforts of privacy. The only disadvantage to this however is the chance that you're not doing something right and the possibility of causing harm to yourself. The best compromise, in this case, would be to hire a private teacher for a lesson or two or until you know enough to practice on your own.

Yoga Beyond Physical Fitness

A lot of people know Yoga as a fitness routine, but for those who are truly interested in learning and practicing Yoga, it is beneficial to take time and really understand to the answer the pressing question on what yoga truly means.

Understanding The Purpose

Yoga, in Sanskrit means union. This refers to the union of the mind, spirit and body. There is a common misconception that Yoga is merely just one of those exercise methods designed to increase the body's flexibility. While Yoga does involve physical practice, its benefits are certainly not limited to the physiological aspects.

Yoga dates more than 5000 years ago. This is an ancient Indian practice designed to promote the union of one's universal consciousness and an individual's own consciousness. The ancient Yogis believed that in order to attain harmony within oneself and the environment, an individual should learn how to integrate or unit the mind, body and spirit. The Yogis created Yoga as a way attain as well as maintain the balance through breathing, exercise and meditation.

Beyond Physical Exercise

Due to the increasing awareness and growing importance of physical exercise, a lot of people today practice Yoga for its physiological benefits, primarily to maintain fitness and a way to lose weight. This is of course generally acceptable, but for anyone who plans to practice Yoga, understanding what is Yoga beyond a mere form of exercise is important to gain better appreciation.

It is important not to overlook the connection between the mind, body, spirit and emotion, as all of these are intricately interlinked. This is because the development and improvement of one area will also generate an improvement of other aspects.

As we delve deeper into the question on what yoga is, it is best to look into the different aspects of the limbs of Yoga.

A Preparatory Activity For Meditation

When the ancient Yogis developed the Asanas or the Yoga poses, the original intention was to develop postures in order to properly condition and prepare the body for extended periods of meditation.

The preparation and conditioning of the body is not merely limited to stretching the muscles, as it also works to purify and cleanse the body from toxins as well as develop stamina and strength over time.

The Yoga meditation is a both a science and an art that involves the systematic observation, acceptance as well as understanding and training of every level of one's being. This is with the goal to coordinate and integrate the different aspects of the self as well as dwell into the center of the consciousness.

The Six Branches of Yoga

Hatha (Yoga Postures)

This is the branch of Yoga that involves the physical poses, breathing techniques as well as meditation - all working to help one achieve improved health and spiritually. There are a number of different styles designed along this path, which include: Astanga, Jiva Mukti, Integral and Iyengar, to name a few.

Bhakti (Yoga of Devotion)

This is the popularly pursued path of Yoga in India, which pertains to the heart and devotion. It promotes one's acceptance and love for all things.

Raja (Yoga of Self-Control)

This path of Yoga focuses on the development of respect for all creations and for oneself as a way of developing the self and learning discipline.

Jnana (Yoga of the Mind)

This is the path of Yoga that deals with the mind and focuses on the individual's intelligence. This path of Yoga regards the intellect and wisdom as important and aims to integrate the two in order to surpass limitations.

Karma (Yoga of Service)

This refers to the path of service that believes that the present situation of a person is based or a product of past actions. This Yoga promotes selfless service performed in the present in order to free the self from selfishness and negativity.

Tantra (Yoga of Rituals)

Among the different paths of Yoga, this is by far the most misunderstood. It uses different rituals in order to experience the sacred. While the sexual act is part of this, it is not the entirety of it. Tantra Yogis are required to possess different qualities such as devotion, humility, purity, cosmic love and dedication to his Guru.

As you can see, Yoga is more than just a way of keeping fit. While this is partly true, Yoga definitely goes beyond a mere form of exercise method.

Samprajnata Samadhi: Samadhi achieved by spurning attachments to the material world is called Savikalpa or Samprajnata Samadhi.

Asamprajnata Samadhi: It is the point of conclusion, when the mind dissociates from the material world, all the afflictions vanish along with image, sight and senses.

Classification of Yoga:

There are a number of ways of developing consciousness. All are Yoga of one sort or another. They may be classified as:

1. Jnanayoga: Attaining realization through knowledge.

2. Karmayoga: Attaining realization through action.

3. Bhaktiyoga: Attaining realization through devotion.

4. Mantrayoga: Attaining realization through Mantra.

5. Rajayoga: Attaining realization through meditation.

6. Hathayoga: Attaining realization through practice and meditation.

Thus, with Yoga, both mental efficiency and activity improve. Yoga preserves and protects health by producing antibodies in the blood and by regulating the mind.

In the modern world, with pollution in air and water and declining nutrition in foods due to adulteration and synthetic production, health threats abound. Yoga and meditation are proven to have beneficial effects on health and this is gaining worldwide recognition and popularity.

Yoga Myth - Advanced Physical Prowess

There are many myths which surround Yoga. Most of them are circulated by people who have never practiced Yoga of any kind. Yet, there are some myths about Yoga, which have been accepted as fact, by Yoga practitioners. It is difficult to shatter an "urban legend, but let's look at one of them.

"An advanced Yogi can perform amazing postures and feats of physical prowess."

While this can be true, and Hatha Yoga practice can lead to physical mastery, feats of physical prowess can be performed by young people, who never practiced any form of Yoga before. Please bear in mind that there are many forms of Yoga, which are not based upon physical exercise.

Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Karma Yoga, are primary forms of Yoga, which have advanced practitioners, who do not have to perform physical feats to be known as "advanced." Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was an advanced Karma Yogi, who inspired non-violent civil rights movements within India, and around the world.

The flaw in all of this "labeling" of Yoga practitioners as advanced, intermediate, and beginner, stems from the idea that Yoga is a physical exercise. Pilates and weight lifting are physical exercise systems, and they require a mental presence in their practice. All forms of Yoga require a mental, physical, and spiritual presence in the practice.

Hatha Yoga (union by physical mastery) does not represent all forms of Yoga. If Hatha Yoga were the only style in existence, it still would require teachers with experience and deep knowledge on a vast subject.

Any child can perform amazing athletic feats of flexibility, but would you place your absolute faith in the ability of a child to teach you Hatha Yoga? Would you be concerned about your safety, your physical limits, and the teacher's experience level?

"Experience" is a keyword, because experience is what really separates the advanced Yoga practitioner from the rest. An experienced Hatha Yoga teacher will guide you through the many aspects of Yoga, such as: Asana, Meditation, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha, Yama, Niyama, and much more.

If you are practicing in a Hatha Yoga class, which contains postures, but does not contain meditation or Pranayama, you are probably practicing "Yoga Fitness." There is a saying: "Half a loaf is better than none." This has never been truer than it is in the case of Hatha Yoga's exposure to the world.

It may take generations before Yoga practitioners stop to read the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Swami Swatmarama. The Yoga Sutras, by Maharshi Patanjali, also deserve more contemporary attention. At this time, there are many Yoga books to read, but the classics are worthy of note, and should be "required reading" for advanced Yoga practitioners.

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus was first discovered 30 years ago, so it rarely grabs space on the front pages these days. But it remains very much a deadly killer.
About 34 million people around the World suffer from it HIV. The virus attacks the body's immune defences, and when they have been destroyed, any number of bacteria, viruses and parasites and fungi can invade the body and play havoc with its systems. That's the condition known as AIDS. Around 2.5 million people have died from AIDS so far, and that number continues to grow because HIV remains such a mystery. Despite millions spent on research the puzzle remains unsolved. This fine documentary takes us carefully step by step through the maze, and reveals where the greatest hopes for a cure are to be found.

In cases in which the patient has been vaccinated, the flu will still install in the body because the immune system will not be able to fight it even if it recognizes and tries to destroy the virus.

HIV virus symptoms are much milder than AIDS symptoms especially when it comes to the protective immune system of the body. Other symptoms of developing AIDS apart from a low immunity are headaches, pain in muscles and joints, fatigue taken to the extreme in which the patient can't even get out of bed, dry cough and excessive fever.

HIV Virus Symptoms

The headaches come as a result of the fever which overheats all the body parts. This could result in an excessive sweating as the body tries to cool off. The fever is meant to increase the body temperature, since the immune system knows that viruses are not resistant to heat. However the HIV virus is. Not succeeding to destroy the virus, the body tries to cool itself by sweating. This is a down said road in which the body struggles to live with all the powers it has left.

A drug addict could develop AIDS much faster. Depending on the drug he or she is in, the AIDS could have a chance of manifesting a lot faster. Dehydration is the main factor to cause problem in the body when flu is installed. A drug addict could develop AIDS from a simple cold if his body is full of narcotics and has a low vitamin supply.

In this case, even smoking could hurt. A cigarette eats up a lot of vitamin C from the body, as much as 10mg a cigarette. This vitamin is essential to the immune system, which could collapse even faster in a lack of vitamin C.

HIV virus symptoms could be diminished to zero in cases in which people carrying the virus have a proper treatment or diet. When the HIV virus is not contained, the patient develops AIDS in a matter of months and even faster.

Physical Yoga and the Human Machine

The practice of physical Yoga postures affects the human machine in very predictable ways. The Yoga asanas are thousands of years old. The poses have been practiced by countless individuals, over the course of five thousand years, because they work! Yoga poses use the physics of the human body to correct any misalignment, while increasing strength and flexibility.

The breathing exercises of Yoga (pranayama), even out the biochemistry of the brain, by balancing the endocrine system. Pranayama exercises also increase the physical capacity of the lungs. These breathing practices will ultimately help to lower blood pressure and support cardiovascular health.

The physical poses of Yoga (asanas) are based on the principals of physics. One aspect of physics is the use of levers and pulleys to accomplish a goal. A can opener is based on the principal of a lever. Yoga poses work on the same principle. The Yoga postures use the body's own skeletal and muscular system, as a mechanical structure, to strengthen and elongate muscles and ligaments.

The balancing asanas help one to maintain good bone density, because they are weight-bearing exercises. As we move more deeply into the postures, we are actually increasing the amount of force or weight on the body. With this increased force, the body adapts and gains more flexibility and strength.

For example, if you bend your knee more toward a ninety degree angle, instead of a forty-five degree angle, in any of the Warrior poses, you will increase your strength much more quickly, and dramatically, because you are increasing the force on the quadriceps muscles.

Depending on the present condition of your body, if you practice an inner rotation of your muscles and tendons, when performing a posture, you might correct any alignment anomalies. Over time, your body will become more open and comfortable when it is in correct alignment, instead of resetting itself to an incorrect alignment during the course of a day. This is one of the primary therapeutic tools of Hatha Yoga, using the poses themselves to heal from injury, while correcting any postural misalignment.

The pranayama exercises of Yoga are a very concrete, physical way to increase lung capacity, improve cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and balance the hormonal system. Pranayama exercises may seem to fall mostly into the meditative aspect of a Yoga practice.

Pranayama is tremendously helpful in preparing the mind to settle down to meditate. However, pranayama exercises are also great physical tools for enhancing our physical and mental health, through the physical manipulation of our breathing patterns. These exercises also help the body to remember to breathe deeply during times of increased stress, thereby increasing our overall cardiovascular endurance.

Teaching Hatha Yoga - Physical Benefits of Yoga Practice

Although Hatha Yoga is much more than exercise, we can make factual comparisons, to other forms of physical exercise, to understand how this ancient practice manages to have such an enthusiastic following. On the physical level, the practice of Hatha Yoga can help a student develop strength, balance, flexibility, and cardio vascular endurance. In comparison to other forms of exercise, Hatha Yoga encompasses all of their physical benefits and more.

Some people would question the cardio vascular aspect, but they have not practiced Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations). This is a sequence of postures, which by itself, enhances strength, balance, flexibility, and cardio vascular endurance. Usually, Surya Namaskars contain twelve postures, but there are exceptions, and there are many different sequences.

Some forms of Power, Vinyasa, and Flow Yoga, connect movement in a similar fashion. Anyone who has practiced these forms of Yoga can attest to the aerobic value. Yet, some studies will question this, because Hatha Yoga is not a high impact exercise. All forms of Yogic exercise respect, and safely work, to preserve the joints.

Yet, exercise of moderate intensity, performed over time, is classified as aerobic. To go a bit further, any exercise activity, which requires oxygen to metabolize glucose, in exchange for energy, is aerobic. With that said, no one usually questions the benefits of strength, balance, and flexibility from Yogic exercise, especially if they witness a room full of women over 50, who can balance their body weight on two hands in bakasana (also known as crane or crow pose).

The postures (asanas) are designed to massage internal organs, preserve skeletal health, and tone the muscles. Massaging internal organs is of primary importance to our survival. We can send toxins on their way by keeping the body in motion, and we do not need high impact movement to perform this task. Prevention of disease, and early detection of disease, are benefits of an internal awareness, which comes with Yoga practice.

On the skeletal level, we want to keep our joints intact for as long as possible. The ligaments and tendons are precious, so we work to keep them in good working condition, as well. On top of this, spinal alignment, during posture practice, helps with mobility, when we become seniors.

How many other exercise systems work so completely? This does not take away the value of cross training. By all means, walk, swim, and play your favorite games; but in comparison, Yoga, on the physical level, is the "Great Healer" of all forms of exercise.
